Author Description

J.R.R. 托尔金（J.R.R. Tolkien）

英国文豪，天才的语言学家，生于1892年1月3日，1925年开始担任牛津大学教授。他创作了一系列脍炙人口的中洲世界史诗，影响*为深远的是《霍比特人》和《魔戒》。这两部巨作，被誉为当代奇幻作品的鼻祖。1972年3月28日，托尔金获英国女王伊丽莎白二世颁发的大英帝国指挥官勋章。

托尔金于1973年9月2日在牛津逝世。托尔金身后，其作品声名未减，至今已畅销2.5亿余册，《魔戒》在英国Waterstones书店和第四频道合办的票选活动中被选为20世纪之书，被网络书店票选为两千年以来*重要的书籍。

克里斯托弗·托尔金（Christopher Tolkien）

奥克奉了魔苟斯的命令，费了很大力气收集起所有敌人的尸体，以及他们的全部装备和武器，在安法乌格砾斯平原中央将其堆成一座山丘，如同一座大山，远远就可望见。埃尔达称它为豪兹—恩—尼尔耐斯。然而在这一整片沙漠中，唯有那座山丘上又萌发并长起了茂盛的青草。从此之后，没有任何魔苟斯的爪牙践踏过那一方土地，在它底下，埃尔达与伊甸人的刀剑腐朽归回尘土。芬巩的王国不复存在；费艾诺众子流离失所，如同风中的落叶。哈多家族的人类没有一个返回希斯路姆，也没有任何有关战事和他们领袖命运的消息传回。但魔苟斯将他麾下那些黑肤的东来者打发去了希斯路姆，将他们封锁在那里，禁止他们离开。他对他们背叛迈兹洛斯而许下的全部丰厚奖赏，就是让他们去劫掠骚扰哈多一族的老弱妇孺。希斯路姆残留的埃尔达，没有逃入荒野和群山中的都被他抓去安格班的矿坑，成了他的奴隶。奥克在北方全境自由来去，往南越来越深入贝烈瑞安德。在那边，多瑞亚斯和纳国斯隆德还在；但魔苟斯不甚在意这两地，有可能是因为他对它们所知不多，也可能是因为在他的恶毒计划中，还不到对付它们的时机。然而他的心思始终不离图尔巩。
因此，胡林被带到魔苟斯面前。魔苟斯通过计谋与密探知道胡林与精灵王有交情，他企图以目光威吓胡林。但胡林还不惧威吓，公然反抗魔苟斯。于是，魔苟斯命人给他戴上枷锁，慢慢加以折磨。但过了一段时间，魔苟斯又来找他，开出条件：只要他肯透露图尔巩的要塞所在，和盘托出他所知晓的精灵王的谋划，便可恢复自由之身，或取得魔苟斯麾下最高统帅的权力与地位。但是，坚定者胡林嘲笑他，说：“魔苟斯·包格力尔，你只看得见黑暗，你是瞎的，并且永远都是瞎的。你不懂是什么支配着人类的心，即便知道也无法给予。谁要是接受魔苟斯的条件，他就是个蠢货。你会先取走成果，再扣下承诺。我若把你想知道的告诉你，就只有死路一条。”
魔苟斯闻言大笑，说：“即便是死亡你也得当作恩惠来向我祈求。”他随即将胡林带到豪兹—恩—尼尔耐斯上，彼时那座山丘刚刚堆成，死亡的腐臭弥漫其上。魔苟斯将胡林放在山丘顶上，命令他朝西望向希斯路姆，想想他的妻儿和其他亲人。“如今他们身处我的国度，”魔苟斯说，“命运系于我的慈悲。”
“你毫无慈悲。”胡林答道，“但你休想通过他们找到图尔巩，因为他们并不知道他的秘密。”
于是魔苟斯怒不可遏，说：“然而我可以找到你，和你那整个该死的家族。哪怕你全家都是铁打的，你也要被我的意志压垮。”他拾起山上的一柄长剑，在胡林眼前折断，一块尖锐的碎片划伤了胡林的脸，但胡林没有畏缩。于是，魔苟斯伸出长长的手臂，指向多尔罗明，诅咒了胡林、墨玟以及他们的后代，说：“且看！无论他们去向何方，我心念的阴影都将笼罩着他们，我的恨意将紧追他们直到天涯海角。”
但胡林说：“你所说的都是徒然。因为你既不能看见他们，也不能遥遥支配他们。只要你保持这个形体，仍然渴望做大地上可见的君王，你就办不到。”
魔苟斯听了，转身面对胡林说：“蠢货，人类当中的卑微之徒，在所有能言的生灵当中人类又最是卑贱！你可曾看见过维拉，或衡量过曼威与瓦尔妲的力量？你可知晓他们心念所及的范围？还是你或许以为他们心念着你，能遥遥护佑你？”
“我不知道。”胡林说，“然而只要他们有意，便有可能。因为只要阿尔达尚存，大君王就不会遭到废黜。”
