Book Abstract

孙中山
孙中山（1866—1925年），生于广东省香山县翠亨村一个农民家庭。中国近代民主主义革命的先行者，中华民国和中国国民党创始人，三民主义的倡导者。1905年成立中国同盟会。1911年辛亥革命后被推举为中华民国临时大总统。代表作品：《建国方略》《建国大纲》《三民主义》等。
孙中山年轻时，一度曾在夏威夷他大哥的店里担任会计工作，并且负责接待外国顾客，其中有英国人、美国人、日本人和夏威夷人。当时孙中山还没有学会英语，很难和顾客们交流思想，更难以应付洽谈商务的工作。为了培养孙中山与外商共事的能力，大哥孙德彰决定送他去寄宿学校学英语。
孙中山去的伊奥兰尼学校，是英国圣公会与威尔斯夫人于1862年创立的。该校对学生施以典型的英国式教育，校中所聘教师多是英国人。
伊奥兰尼为教会学校，对学生进行严格的宗教教育。《圣经》为必修课，由校长韦礼士亲自用英语讲授，并规定寄宿生每日要到学校教堂去做早祷和晚祷，用英语朗读祷文。每逢主日还要集体前往圣安德鲁教堂做礼拜，听牧师用英语讲道，并参加唱诗班，用英语唱圣歌，因此孙中山的英语水平提高很快。
伊奥兰尼学校还要求学生参加消防训练和军事训练，孙中山通过参加这些训练学会了一些与体育有关的英语词汇。
孙中山为了减轻大哥的经济负担，后来在校实行半工半读，充当学校的杂役。这样，他与外国人接触的机会大大增加，学会了大量生活中的英语词汇，同时养成了独立生活的习惯。孙中山本是插班生，学习英语的时间很短，三年前连字母也不会读，而后来他的毕业成绩名列前茅，而且还得了“英语语法”第二名的奖品。抓住一切机会和外国人对话或通讯，以提高口头和笔头的实践能力是他主要的学习方法。
孙中山在刻苦学习英语的同时，还努力攻读汉语。当时，杜南山先生在檀香山为美国人教授汉语，还创办了汉语实习班，招收华侨子弟，家贫者可以免费或半费入学。孙中山也参加了汉语学习，打下了良好的汉语基础，提高了英汉互译的能力。
毕业以后，孙中山仍返茂宜岛，协助大哥管理店务。j年的读书生活，使他对西方社会、经济和政治有所了解。离校以后，他一直坚持英语学习，从未间断。他经常阅读英文报刊，从中了解世界大事。
1884年4月15日，孙中山就读于香港中央书院。香港政府于1862年2月从伦敦聘请教育专家创办该校，教师多系英国名流，包括英国汉学家理雅各博士等。课程安排是每日上午讲授汉语，下午讲授英语，以期培养英汉兼优的学生。孙中山的各科成绩均佳，而对英语课的兴趣尤为浓厚。
中央书院的人学条件不受国籍、宗教和年龄的限制，学生分别来自中国、英国、美国、日本、菲律宾等国。由于各国学生共处，有利于中曲文化的交流，有利于开阔胸襟，长才益智。因此，孙中山用外语交际的能力亦随之大有提高，深受英国教师赏识。
孙中山卒出于中央书院以后，又人香港西医书院深造，巧的是，该院的图书馆藏有“四书…‘五经”的英译本。孙中山偶见其书，欣喜过望，潜心研读，既熟谙了我国古籍，又增长了英语知识。
