《并非舞文弄墨：英国散文名篇新选（精装）》是我国知名的诗人、翻译家、英国文学研究专家王佐良先生的一本小书。王佐良作为编者（同时也是主要译者）选取了30位英国作家的散文作品，每位作家都有对其作品的评析，置于译文之前。他以时间为轴对各代各型的英国散文进行了精心梳理，包括17世纪的随笔、人物特写，18世纪的期刊论说和政论文，19世纪的小品文和历史著作，20世纪的文论、游记、科普文等，主要展现了英国散文中的一条平易散文传统。平易但不平淡，既言之有物，又言而有文。他认为，“平易不止是归真返璞，而且是一种文明的品质”。

Author Description

王佐良（1916－1995），中国现代诗人和英国文学研究专家，浙江上虞人。

1929年至1934年在武昌文华中学读书，后进清华大学。1939年毕业于清华大学外文系，后任清华大学（西南联合大学）助教、讲师。抗战后考取第九届中英庚款公费留学，1947年秋赴牛津大学研究英国文学。于1949年9月建国前夕回国，应聘到北京外国语学院任教授。曾担任北京外国语学院顾问兼外国文学研究所所长，中国外语教学研究会副会长，中国英语教学研究会会长，中国莎士比亚研究会副会长，中国作协理事，《外国文学》主编。

江纳善·斯威夫特（1667～1745）
斯威夫特（Jonathan Swift）是爱尔兰都柏林三一学院的毕业生，有政治抱负，却始终未酬其志，初入世做了远房贵族亲戚的私人秘书。他不甘心久居高级仆人的地位，于是投入英国国会而为教士，参与政治活动，以文才先后为辉格、托雷两党服务，成为名公贵人的座上客，但终于失意回到爱尔兰，以圣·帕特里克大教堂教长终其生。作为一个英国移民的后代，他平时热衷于伦敦上流社会生活，到晚年却成了爱尔兰人民的勇敢的代言人，对英国殖民者的剥削和压迫进行了大胆的抨击。而爱尔兰人民也真是爱他；当英国政府悬重赏捉拿《布商的信》这一系列激烈攻击英国暴政的小册子的作者的时候，虽然斯威夫特是执笔者一事也有人知道，却没有一个去告发他。
他的私生活方面也是一个谜团。他的生父是谁？至今仍有疑问。有姑娘爱他，但他不愿同她结婚，终致她伤心而死；他爱另一位姑娘，对她写了最温柔最赤诚的情书，然而几十年下来，也始终没有结婚。他对朋友极为热情、关心，但又是他明白宣告自己憎恨人类；在他的笔下，人类也确是最肮脏、最自私、最卑鄙的野兽，远不及马高贵。
然而这位充满矛盾的人却是18世纪英国的伟大作家，英国散文发展史上的关键人物。
他是《格利佛游记》的作者，而谁又不曾读过或至少听过大人国、小人国的故事？这是一本适合各类读者的奇书：儿童（主要看头两部故事），历史家（考证当时的朝政），思想家（研究其对文化、科学的态度），左派批评家（摘取其反战反殖民主义的词句），甚至先锋派理论家（把他作为运用奇思幻想的大师、黑色幽默的前驱），如此等等，适足证明这本书内容丰富，雅俗共赏。
但是他还写了大量其他作品：各种辩论文章，期刊杂文，布道文，小品文，公开信，诗。而且无论写什么，总是写得有文采，有独特的风格。
然而他却反对美文，主张写得平易晓畅。他十分注意语言问题，多次写文指摘僻词、难词、俚语、行话、生造的“硬词”等等——例如《致一位新任神职的青年先生的信》。也是在这封信里，他提出了一个关于什么是好的文章风格的有名答案：“把恰当的词放上恰当的位置，这就是风格的真正定义。” 这句话经过后人重复引用，至今不绝，大概是关于风格的最有名的警句了，也许只有法国布封的“风格即人”可比。
拿这个定义付诸实践的，首先是斯威夫特自己。
他饱读诗书，但写文不掉书袋，善于运用最平常的词，把它们巧妙地排列、组合而产生各种效果，其最著名的是讽刺，有时明显，有时微妙，例如《一个小小的建议》通篇是一大讽刺，然而有些读者以为这是郑重其事的正式建议。这是因为伴随着讽刺而来的，还有斯威夫特散文的第二个特点，即娓娓动听的说理，像是说得比任何人都周到、都细致，因此他用词虽简单，句子却有很长的，往往要经若干从句、种种说明之后，才图穷匕见，托出了他的真实意思。现举两例，一短一长：既然神道与人道的结合是我教的重要信条，奇怪的是：有些牧师写文章只有神道，而没有一点人道。
——《零碎题目随想》至于我本人，在多年劳而无功地提出许多空词、不切实际的意见之后，以为再无成功之望了，幸而想起了这个建议，不但完全是新的，而且有切实的内容，花钱不多，费事不大，靠我们自力就能实行，因此也不会有得罪英格兰的危险。
——《一个小小的建议》这两例，一例是讽刺教会的不人道，另一例是点出英格兰的压迫和剥削是爱尔兰民生困苦的总根源，都有力地达到了原定的效果，其方法就是把最要紧的话放在最要紧的位置上，在这里就是一个段落的末端。
斯威夫特还有一种功夫，就是运用最平常的比喻来表达深奥、复杂、不易表达的道理。《扫帚把上的沉思》就是一例。用扫帚把来比喻衰落、失势的人，多么恰当，而且无须多加解释，因为扫帚是家家皆有、人人尽知之物。同样，在《格利佛游记》里，他用大头派、小头派来比喻教派，用高跟党、低跟党来比喻政党，也是用了日常生活里尽人皆知的普通东西——鞋跟的高低和鸡蛋的大头小头——来说明这些教派、政党不仅一丘之貉，差别极小，而且为这点小小的差别争论不休，甚至动起武来，又是何等荒谬！
