《唐宋婉约词研究》：
宋代大学者王应麟《困学纪闻》主张，“古乐府者，诗之旁行也；词曲者，古乐府之末造也。”这个意思就是说，词是诗歌的末流。古代以《诗经》为正统和本源之诗，这是四言诗，后来发展出了五言诗和七言诗，而词作为四、五、六、七言甚至更长的句子的混合体，就被作为了诗歌的次要产物。显然，这种看法贬低了词。有更多的学者反驳了这种看法，比如清代汪森的《词综序》说，“古诗之于乐府，近体之于词，分镳并骋，非有先后。谓诗降为词，以词为诗之余，殆非通论矣。”
有人认为词之所以叫作诗余，因为它是诗歌的“盈余”，就是超出了五言和七言律绝的体式，而且还加入了“和声、泛声和散声”，然后形成了标准的长短句格式。比如晚清的著名词学家况周颐就在《蕙风词话》里说：
诗余之余，作盈余之余解。唐人朝成一诗，夕付管弦，往往声希节促，则加入和声。凡和声皆以实字填之，遂成为词。词之情文节奏，并皆有余于诗，故日诗余。世俗之说，若以词为诗之剩义，则误解此余字矣。
这种看法是比较合理的，他的意思就是因诗成曲，而曲本身有自己的自足性，它需要对应的节奏，而这些节奏肯定不会与词完全对应。我们听一些流行音乐时，也能看出，很多歌词在歌曲中，会发生延宕、急促、转换，往往与曲调不合。
