一对年轻夫妇，领着一个大约五岁的小女孩，急冲冲地朝我走来。
“同志，请问去卫星发射基地咋走？”“问这干什么？”“听说要发射美国的卫星，孩子和我们都想来看看。”“你们从哪儿来？”“遵义。”“是国防工厂的吗？”“不是，我们是个……个体户。”“叔叔，”小女孩突然拉住了我的手，“发射卫星，能让小孩看吗？”“能，肯定能。”我忙蹲下去，双手捧起小女孩的脸，在她的额头轻轻留下一吻。
西昌，我的第二故乡。
十六年前，当命运的列车轻轻一颠，便将我抛在了这块荒凉的土地上时，我的心远比严冬的大凉山还要冰凉。我做梦也不会想到，在这片被上帝遗弃的土地上，日后还会升起什么‘‘亚洲一号”卫星。
西昌位于四川的西南部，地处成昆铁路中段，扼成都、昆明两大旅游区之要冲。北距成都577公里，南距昆明543公里。从成都搭乘去昆明或金沙江的列车，12个小时便可到达；若乘坐西南航空公司的飞机，只需45分钟。
西昌是全国最大的彝族聚居区。除汉族外，这儿还有藏族、回族、蒙族、苗族、壮族、傣族、僳僳族、布依族、纳西族等十余个民族。彝族历史悠久，风情古朴，且彝族人待人热忱，十分好客。假如你有机会走进彝家山寨，主人定会十分高兴地留你做客，并为你奉上颇具彝家风味的“坛坛酒”和“坨坨肉”。
“坛坛酒”是用玉米、高梁和荞麦等杂粮为原料，再配以十余种草药，装进瓦罐里酿制而成的。这种酒喝起来香甜爽口，却并不醉人。
“坨坨肉”一般是用一种叫“子猪”的肉烹制而成。由于这种猪长年敞放于山坡野林之中，奔放自由，觅食丰富，能长就一身紧肉，故吃起来细嫩糯软，喷香不腻。待你吃饱道别时，主人还会将一条猪腿或半个猪脸送你带走，以示对客人的尊重。
西昌是一座历史悠久的古城。早在石器时代，这片土地上便开始了人类的繁衍生息。据载，中国历史上许多著名的人物都曾涉足此地，譬如：司马迁“西征巴蜀”，诸葛亮“五月渡泸”，忽必烈南征会理，杨升庵“夜宿泸山”，石达开兵败大渡河，蒋介石坐镇“西康”，等等。
西昌是西方学者和旅行家探险的乐园。公元1275年，意大利探险家马可·波罗来到西昌，成为到西昌的第一位外国人。此后，从1868年至1909年的四十一年间，法国旅行家安邺、英国旅行家巴伯、法国亲王奥尔良、法国人凡尔赛、法国殖民军一等军医吕真、英国人布洛克，以及法国人多龙率领的考察团，也都先后来过两昌。
