《午夜之门》：
找名片是件头疼的事，每次非得在我那个深蓝色塑料盒里挨个翻一遍。当那些名字匆匆掠过，你会发现，刨去那些你压根儿就不认识的大多数，你讨厌的人远多于你喜爱的人。找名片有点儿像参加个热闹非凡的聚会，人们在辨认、呼应、回避、钩心斗角……当然必要的话，你可以把那些讨厌的家伙撕碎，扔进垃圾箱——这绝不仅仅限于理论上。你还会发现，其中居然也包括了死者。说来这不奇怪，我们迟早都要从自己的名字后面隐退。以前每回找名片，鲍尔·博鲁姆（Poul Borum）都从人群中挤出来，跟我打招呼。他的名片朴实无华，淡蓝色的名字下面印着他在哥本哈根的地址电话。
自1990年秋天起，我在丹麦奥胡斯大学教了两年书。奥胡斯虽说是丹麦第二大城市，可比中国的县城大不了多少。那儿的海永远是灰色的，正如我的心情。
1991年秋，我的丹麦文的诗集《霜降时节》出版了。我那天下课回家，在门口碰见房东乌拉夫，一个离婚鳏居的退了休的建筑师。他告诉我，今天报纸上有篇关于我的新诗集的书评，约我晚饭前到他那儿坐坐。乌拉夫住一层，客厅宽敞明亮，半开的玻璃窗映着金红色树木。一台索尼袖珍半导体收音机正播放贝多芬的《田园》交响乐。他先斟了两杯西班牙开胃酒，找出报纸，把书评逐句翻成英文。他过高估计了我的英文水平，我听得稀里糊涂的，但大意是表扬，这从乌拉夫的脸上就能读到。他为有我这么个既能上报纸又能按时缴房租的房客而骄傲。
第二天，我的老板兼丹麦文译者安娜（Anne）告诉我，书评的作者是博鲁姆，丹麦诗歌界的中心人物。他除了写诗翻译，也搞评论拍电视片。他曾在报纸开了个专栏，把丹麦以至北欧的诗歌彻底清理了一番。他用词尖刻，以诗划界，把大多数诗人扫地出门。
这专栏被人叫做“博鲁姆法庭”。安娜还告诉我，我在八十年代中期译的《北欧现代诗选》中包括博鲁姆的一首诗，还有他前妻英格尔·克里斯坦森（Inger Christensen）的六首。可惜当时除了中文这个随身行李外，我一无所有。
两个星期后，安娜转达了博鲁姆的问候，并给了我他的电话号码。我战战兢兢拨通电话，好像对方是上帝。“我是博鲁姆。”他说，声音平和，略有点儿沙哑。他的英文之流利，更让我结巴。这种语言上的不平等，势必造成严重的心理障碍。幸好他的态度真诚友好，否则我们大概永远不会见面。
哥本哈根跟奥胡斯不一样，是个国际都市，成了我逃避现实的最后一站。我当时护照签证都有问题，不能离开丹麦边境。有一回在哥本哈根上错了火车。
我胆儿还挺大，竞睡了，“梦里不知身是客”，差点儿坐到德国。幸亏检票员查票，把我叫醒，要不然我非得卡在官僚机器中间不可。
博鲁姆先生着实把我吓了一跳。他方头大耳，秃瓢，大耳环在右耳垂上晃荡；他身穿带穗及金属纽扣的黑皮夹克，腰间系宽板带，脚蹬铜头高统靴。整个一个黑手党教父。这装束是打哪儿来的？我认识不少六十年代的嬉皮士，如今都衣冠楚楚，正襟危坐。看来他是那种拒绝根据场景更换服装的人。
博鲁姆的公寓很大，在一栋古老建筑物的三层，复杂得像个迷宫。下午五点半，哥本哈根早已进入夜晚。几盏台灯供出黑暗中的部分细节：电传机、纸条、唱盘、活页夹等。昏暗的灯光把我们引向一个开放的空间。我从未见过这么大的私人图书馆：书架纵横排列，所有书名输进计算机，按字母顺序。博鲁姆告诉我，他有五万多册藏书，绝大部分是诗集。他按字母很快找到我的几本瑞典文和丹麦文的译本。有个小伙子正帮他整理图书，交代了几句便告辞了。
我在昏暗中坐下，博鲁姆东拉西扯，忙这忙那，但能感觉到他在审视我。他看看表说他在饭馆订了座位，于是打电话叫出租车。我跟他穿过一串儿房间，开后门，锁上，再踏上个狭窄的老式电梯，好像是通往地狱似的。电梯慢吞吞的，吱嘎作响。我们像母腹里的双胞胎挤在一起。一盏小灯照在博鲁姆的秃瓢上，他显得表情古怪。电梯终于停下来，没有地狱，外面的空气又冷又新鲜。
