《神女》处理的是中国历史和文学中的一个经典母题——神女，从上古的龙（阴性）、女巫、女娲，到《楚辞》中的神女、湘妃，再到中古的洛神、汉女及各种传说中的江河神女，研究其形象的衍变互换、与现实世界和民间信仰的错综关联，在文学中的不断呈现，及作者的想象和阐释。全书主要围绕在唐代诗歌（尤其是李贺）和传奇中蔚为大观的各种江河神女进行描绘和阐释，其瑰丽诡异的意象令人向往。

中国巫师，正如西伯利亚东部的雅库特人巫师一样，与他们在恍惚迷狂的神秘行程中邂逅的神灵都有爱情关系。中国情爱诗人根据自己的需要，对这一特色大加改编，他们饶有兴致地讲述古代巫师们企图把神女引诱到他们怀中，并以此比喻年轻人或者多愁善感的皇帝追求神女一样的女人的爱情，或者干脆就是追求实在的神女的爱情。
由于男巫有某些超常渠道接近神女，就像女巫接近男神一样，因此，尽管事实上，他们主动示爱也常会遭到拒绝，但在某种程度上，他们仍然拥有神女的某些神性。因此，中古的神王们本身就是巫师。但是，他们偶尔也要扮演成子民的替罪羊，而这一角色又经常被分派给代其受难的替身，因为受难是取得神灵佑护所必须付出的报偿。同样地，女巫们也对男神们施展她们的魅力，也因此在某种程度上拥有神女们的特征。
