Author Description

胡适，（1891年12月17日——1962年2月24日）字适之，安徽绩溪人。曾任北京大学校长、台湾中央研究院院长、中华民国驻美大使等职。
胡适因提倡文学改良而成为新文化运动的领袖之一，是第一位提倡白话文、新诗的学者，致力于推翻二千多年的文言文，虽与陈独秀政见不合，但与其同为五四运动的轴心人物，对中国近代史产生了较为深远的影响。
胡适兴趣广泛，著述丰富，在文学、哲学、史学、考据学、教育学、伦理学、红学等诸多领域都有深入的研究。著有《白话文学史》《胡适文存》《尝试集》《中国哲学史大纲》等书。

导读
作为本书中的第一篇文章，编者选取了这篇胡适写杜威的文章。杜威20世纪以来，一直是美国最具声望的实用主义哲学家，他在哥伦比亚大学教书期间影响了很多中国日后著名的学者和教育家，如张伯苓、蒋梦麟、陶行知、陈鹤琴等。胡适也是他们中的一位，胡适曾将杜威与赫胥黎一起并称为对他的思想影响最大的两个人，胡适还为他的小儿子起名胡思杜，意为思念杜威之意。所以了解胡适的哲学及教育思想，杜威是一个无法绕开的存在。
杜威的教育哲学
杜威先生常说，“哲学就是广义的教育学说”。这就是说哲学便是教育哲学。
这句话初听了很可怪。其实我们如果仔细一想，便知道这句话是不错的。我们试问古往今来的哲学家哪一个不是教育家？哪一个没有一种教育学说？哪一种教育学说不是根据于哲学的？
我且举几个例。我们小时候读《三字经》，开端就是“人之初，性本善，性相近，习相远；苟不教，性乃迁”。这几句说的是孔子的教育哲学。《三字经》是宋朝人做的，所代表的又是程子朱子一派的教育哲学。再翻开朱注的《论语》，第一章“学而时习之”的底下注语道：“学之为言效也。人性皆善而觉有先后。后觉者必效先觉之所为，乃可以明善而复其初也。”请看他们把学字解作仿效，把教育的目的看作“明善而复其初”：这不是极重要的教育学说吗？我们如研究哲学史，便知道这几句注语里面，不但是解释孔子的话，并且含有禅家明心见性的影响。这不是很明白的例吗？
