作者简平，用一种叙事散文的笔体，为我们详细讲述了他本人与母亲双双罹患癌症后的经历。全文没有对于身患癌症的自悲自怜，没有征服命运的口号，更没有华丽的词藻，但平实中却令人心惊动魄，为之感动，并与之沉思。
命运的变故来得太突然，自己的，和母亲的。忙碌的工作和生活像一列疾驶的列车，随着一次胃镜检查，呼地一下停在了半道上。随之而来的治疗，导致的身心失控、严重失眠乃至抑郁，几乎击垮了简平。然而年近八十的母亲，坚持探望和陪伴，这种默默的支持给他带来了极大的安慰与信心，从而慢慢走出浓重的阴影。本应慢慢好起来的生活，随着母亲也被查出癌症，再次被罩上了阴翳，可是母亲却坦然地说，她先前活得很好，现在要和儿女们一起努力，更好地走过生命的路程。随后，简平陪着母亲在治疗的同时，去了香港、台湾、日本和韩国旅行，在这段的时日中，母亲是那么满足，那么从容，那么达观。母子二人就这样携手把生命中艰难的日子，过成了美好的时光。
