1．我的家世及初次历险提起我父亲，他在诺丁汉郡有一份小小的地产。
我们家有五个儿子，我排行老三。我十四岁时，父亲送我到剑桥的伊梅纽尔大学就读。我在那里一待就是三年，学习很努力。家里倒也给些生活费，但因入不敷出，我就拜伦敦一位有名望的外科医生詹姆士·贝慈先生为师，跟他学了四年。父亲不时地给我寄些零花钱，我立志将来要周游四方，于是就把寄来的钱用于学习航海和数学。后来我辞别了贝慈先生，回到父亲身边。多亏父亲、叔叔和其他亲戚的接济，我凑齐了四十英镑。他们还许下诺言，每年拿出三十英镑供我在荷兰莱顿大学深造。我在那里研修医学两年零七个月，心知这门学问对远海航行必有用处。

斯威夫特1667年生于爱尔兰都柏林。1686年在都柏林三一学院取得学士学位，1692年获牛津大学硕士学位，1701年获三一学院神学博士学位。他的主要作品有：《一只澡盆的故事》《书战》《圣灵的机械作用》《鲍席斯和菲利蒙》《关于纠正、改进和确定英国语言的建议》《爱尔兰状况浅见》《一个小小的建议》等。斯威夫特晚景凄凉，1745年去世，葬于圣帕特里克大教堂。

《格列佛游记》自1726年出版后就受到英国人民的欢迎。它先后被译成几十种语言，在世界各国流传甚广，深入人心，特别是小人国和大人国的故事更是家喻户晓，妇孺皆知。伏尔泰、拜伦、高尔基、鲁迅都非常推崇斯威夫特的讽刺作品。读者对《格列佛游记》都给予很高的评价。它是英国文学史乃至世界文学史上的一部伟大的讽刺小说。
本译稿力求保持原作的风貌，只是删去了个别与作品主题关系不大的情节和内容，对一些过于冗长的议论文字也作了压缩。小说中需要注释的地方其实很多，为了故事的连贯性，译者决定注释从简，有些需要增添背景知识的地方尽量在小说的行文中加以体现。此外，原作字艰词涩，行文技巧极其复杂，为了方便读者，译文采用了讲故事的手法，以求通俗易懂，自然流畅，让读者体悟到阅读是一件愉快惬意的事情。
