Book Abstract

陶氏一门在东晋虽说不如王谢这些世家豪族，却也因陶侃的功德而名闻天下。陶渊明的曾祖父、祖父和父亲三代人都做过官。根据《命子》诗中的描述。可以把他们的功德归纳为三点：一是建功立业、 “大济苍生”的精神。曾祖父陶侃出身贫寒，早年丧父，从小就很有抱负。读书之余又苦练武功，入仕之后为朝廷征战平乱，屡建功勋，被封为长沙郡公。祖父担任太守而能“惠和千里”，造福百姓。父亲虽然不热衷仕途，但毕竞还是做官干了些事业。二是谨慎处世、善始善终的品德。陶侃位至公爵，能做到“功遂辞归，临宠不忒”，急流勇退。祖父也能做到“慎终如始”。三是淡泊名利思想。影响最直接便是渊明的父亲，他为官“淡焉虚止”，不孜孜追求功名利禄，既能建功立业，又能谨慎处世、淡泊名利。这三点可以称之为陶渊明的家族精神。渊明长大成家之后，当喜得长子俨时，便在《命子》诗中又把这种家族精神传给了自己的下一代。
外祖父孟嘉担任过劝学从事，举为秀才，又做过江州别驾、巴丘令、桓温的参军。关于孟嘉的生平事迹《晋书·桓温列传》之后附有孟嘉的小传，在陶渊明写的《晋故征西大将军长史孟府君传》中则更为详细。据此，我们也可将孟嘉的立身行事概括为三点：一是为人随和而有原则。他“冲默有远量”“温雅平旷”“色和而正”，“行不苟合，言无夸矜，未尝有喜愠之容”。二是善写诗文。他命笔作文，“不容思，文辞超卓，四座叹之”。三是嗜酒酣饮，任情自然。孟嘉“好酣饮，逾多不乱，至于任怀得意，融然远寄，旁若无人”。桓温曾经问孟嘉：“酒有何好，而卿嗜之？”孟嘉笑着回答说：“明公但不得酒中趣尔。”事实证明，孟嘉的这些特点对陶渊明性格和文学爱好的形成有着直接的影响。

根据《晋书·陶侃传》中记载，陶渊明的曾祖父是大司马陶侃，而陶侃小时候的地位并不高，陶侃之父只是个地方小吏，他也只是个没品的监鱼吏。那个社会中，这样的人不少，因为他们知道无法成功索性安于自己的生活。而陶侃偏不，他立志要闯出自己的一片天空。
