1.艺术家蔡国强深入阐释其艺术观及对中国现实诸多问题的认识。围绕“农民达芬奇”展览，艺术家敞开心扉，对中国农民对于现代化的贡献、农民的现实处境、中国的高速发展所隐含的种种危机，以及艺术家自身的独特创作观念，畅所欲言，其中许多问题艺术家都是首次公开发表见解。
2.“农民达芬奇”展览筹备过程全记录。2010年5月至7月，在上海世博会全面展示城市美好生活的当时当地，蔡国强举办“农民达芬奇”展览，将中国农民自力更生发明创造的飞机、飞碟、潜艇、赛车等搬进美术馆展出，并将现场展示制作“机器人”“航空母舰”的过程。为筹备展览，艺术家走访了八个省市的九位农民发明家，行程近九千公里，本书记录下艺术家一行下乡工程的点点滴滴，从中可以看到展览是如何从最初的想法一步步得以实现的。

北京奥运会开幕式上的“大脚印”，国庆60周年庆典的“和平鸽”和“网幕烟花”，这些充满创意与童真的大型焰火作品，无不给人留下深刻印象。少为人知的是，这些作品全都出自同一位艺术家之手——蔡国强。

告别这些诞生于大城市的“官方作品”，蔡国强将目光投向农村与普通老百姓的生活。当城市人被永不满足的物质所累之时，生活在大地上的农民，却把双手伸向了创造个人梦想的自由天地，这个颇具讽刺意义的现实，给艺术家极大触动。2010年5月，在上海世博会全面展示城市美好生活的当时当地，蔡国强举办“农民达芬奇”展览，将农民自力更生发明制作的飞碟、飞机、潜艇等搬进美术馆展出，并将于现场制作机器人、“航空母舰”等。
为此次展览，艺术家创作了三句口号，从不同角度概括展览的意义：

“不知如何降下”——表达对于中国社会高速发展之下的思考与担忧。
“重要的不在飞起来”——是对我们这个社会、这个时代的反思，重要的不是飞得越高、越快、越好。
“农民，让城市更美好”——在以“城市”为主题的上海世博会的背景下，通过这个展览不仅讨论农民对于现代化的贡献，以及农民的现实处境等当今最为重要的社会议题，通过展示独立在集体意志和行为外的个体农民的创造力，以及一个个鲜活生命的感人故事，更可以看到一个民族追求公平民主社会的希望。

“我是拉洋车的机器人，吴玉禄是我爹，我拉我爹去上街，谢谢。”蔡国强一坐上农民吴玉禄制造的机器人拉车，机器人就一边拉车前进，一边摇头晃脑地满嘴吆喝，吴玉禄亲口录制的这几句话通过扩音器反复播放，把蔡国强逗得前仰后合。
3月4日，蔡国强开始了对农民发明家的寻访，第一站就是北京通州马务村农民吴玉禄家。吴玉禄是著名的农民发明家，创造了包括机器人在内的诸多发明。蔡国强不仅邀请吴玉禄全家参加《农民达芬奇》的展览，现场制作并表演他们的机器人，还委托他特别制作了几位典型的现代艺术家动作的机器人：跳墙的伊夫·克莱因、抱狼的波依斯、甩颜料的波拉克等。
从3月4日开始的10天时间里，蔡国强的寻访从北京出发，行经江苏、安徽、四川、湖北、广东、福建、浙江、江西8个省，几乎每天换一个城市，从飘雪的北京，来到温暖如春的广东东莞，行程将近9000公里，绕了半个中国，先后寻访了9位农民。我作为随行记者同行，记录下了旅途中的点点滴滴。
