费曼故事（节选一）：
1945年7月16日清晨5点29分45秒，当第一颗原子弹在美国新墨西哥州微明的天空中爆炸时，理查德·费曼可能是唯一用裸眼观看的人。聚集在这里的著名科学家和政要人物每人都发给一副电焊工用的眼镜，费曼也不例外。但他永远都是个叛逆者，他没有戴眼镜，而是躲在一辆大卡车的挡风玻璃后面，他心想这么厚的玻璃一定能够阻挡住紫外线辐射。费曼深知那天将要发生什么事情，就是他领导一个小组，进行了第一个核裂变炸弹所需要的极其复杂的运算。
一道强光穿透了黑暗，顷刻之间它变得非常明亮，一瞬间费曼的目光不由自主地转向一边。然后，光好像灭了一会儿，等它重新出现的时候，已经形成了一个光芒四射的大火球，迅速变幻着颜色，先是白色，然后是黄色，最后变成了橘黄色。一片由烟雾和爆炸碎片构成的黑云冲天而起，渐渐地形成了我们所熟悉的蘑菇形。
费曼感到一股强烈的喜悦之情，几个月艰苦的工作终于结出了果实。但是，由于这次爆炸及其后果，他的生活发生了急剧的变化。此后的几年中，费曼对物理学的贡献非常之大，以致很多物理学家把他称为“新的”物理学之父，而爱因斯坦则是“早先的”物理学之父。

费曼一度违背委员会主席的意愿，收集到有关航天飞机史上遇到的所有问题的第一手资料；他确信爆炸是由橡皮环设计不合理引起的。他用富于戏剧性和说服性的方式演示了寒冷天气对橡皮圈的影响，他的发言抢尽了委员会的风头，这是典型的费曼作风。
