张爱玲曾说人生恨事有四：海棠无香；鲥鱼多骨；曹雪芹《红楼梦》残缺不全；高鹗妄改——死有余辜。人生多少爱恨处，爱玲不说，轻轻一荡就绕开去，给后世的万千“张迷”留下一桩新的恨事：恨爱玲话少，两段情史几乎只字不提，爱也罢，恨也好，至死保持缄默。
好在，还有另一个人——胡兰成，他不愿意把那段说不清的情缘永埋尘埃，或说他忍不住。他提起笔，深情绵绵，又略带着一份向世人炫耀的得意与喜悦，精描细画，一位民国的临水照花人，才款款从《今生今世》里走出来。
胡兰成的一面之词，真真假假，无处求证，尽管张爱玲曾就他的这本书提出一些抗议：“胡兰成书中讲我的部分缠夹得奇怪，他也不至于老到这样。”可一本《今生今世》还是成了后人研究张爱玲情史的重要史料——倒要感谢胡兰成的多话。
见了他，她变得很低很低，低到尘埃里，但她心里是欢喜的，从尘埃里开出花来。离开他，她没有选择死去，她只是从此慢慢凋零。那样一个水晶心玻璃肝的人儿，才华漫顶，写作事业如日中天，多少渴慕者愿随其后，她却要为一个男人低到尘埃里，又心甘情愿在低低的尘埃里开出欢喜的花来。尘埃里的花，如何开得明媚长久？一缕芳魂，终被尘埃吞没了。这才是“张迷”们心头最大的恨事吧。
与一位“张迷”朋友聊起张爱玲，她说：“这世上没有无缘无故的爱，亦没有无缘无故的恨。张那样一个聪明剔透的人，凡夫俗子大草包如何入得她的心、她的眼？胡有可恨处，也必有他的可爱处。”朋友的这番话恰是替我说的。
一段闲笔，只为让自己与那一段众说纷纭的情缘拉开一段距离，尽量以旁观者的清醒去看待。可穿过近七十年的岁月望回去，那朵在爱里盛开、在爱里凋零的花，依旧让人心疼。爱情不老，自古多情儿女心相通，那样浓烈的爱恨情愁，哪一段青春岁月不曾遇过？只是没有人像爱玲那般不走运，为那一段情，萎谢了自己的光华，付出自己的后半生，抛却尘世很多年，那一桩爱情公案还在为人说过来评过去，没有一个定论。
当然，依爱玲的个性，她是不在意后人如何评说的。
欲说当年，就避不开胡兰成。尽管这个人在历史上所扮的角色很不光彩，极不受人待见，但这一段倾城之恋里，他还是占去城池半壁。
有人说胡兰成是伴随着张爱玲在文坛的再度崛起而慢慢走入大众视线的。胡兰成晚年定居日本，本无人再想起提及，但在海内外的“张迷”们对张爱玲痴迷一片之际，胡兰成的《今生今世》《山河岁月》也走入了大家的视线，随着张爱玲的书一并热起来。张爱玲免费为他的书做了一回代言人。
也有人对他不甚熟悉，问：“胡兰成，何许人也？”
有人答：“一个才华横溢、对女性（尤其是知识女性）有致命吸引力却又薄情、政治敏感度趋向于白痴、长得还成的男人。”很幽默、很简洁却也算到位的回答。
胡兰成，又名张嘉仪，浙江嵊县人，父亲是个茶栈的伙计，母亲是不识字的农家妇女，家中兄弟多，他排行老六。极端无我的家庭环境造就了他极端自我的性格，他从小注意自身的情感变化多于注意他人。这倒可以为他后来的薄情泛滥找到比较靠谱的注解。
胡兰成虽出身寒门，却有满腹经世之才与入仕之志。贫寒的出身自然让他无法选择高起点的人生起步，他只能脚踏实地，循着寻常贫寒士子所走的路一步步向前迈进。读书、习文、求职、进取，东南西北，漂泊无定，努力在那个动荡不安的时代大背景下寻求一处供他施展才华的人生舞台。乱世里的一棵树，宁折也会守着自己脚下的土地，矢志不移。胡兰成不是树，他是乱世里的一棵草或者一叶浮萍，为着乱世里的一份安稳与荣华，他随时随地都会改变自己的方向与行程。所以他不顾千夫所指，去投靠了汪精卫，做了他的御用文人；在汪精卫处失宠后，又去投靠了他自以为更大更安稳的主子日本人，做了为世人所不齿的汉奸。
政治上摇摆不定不辨方向，感情上，也是如此。他的生命中来来往往的女人里，张爱玲不过其中一位，并没有比别的女人有更多不同。面对他生命中的每一位女人，上至才华空绝的张爱玲下至乡间村妇，他都自称是那样懂得，且怜惜。在《今生今世》中，胡兰成提到的与他有关系的女人一共八位，除了染病的全慧文和被张爱玲取代的歌女小白杨，其他六位在书中所占篇幅竟然相当。文字上的使用平均也正印证了胡兰成在感情上的平均，而这一点恰是张爱玲最不能忍受的。她可以允许他心里装有别人，却不允许他将自己与别人相提并论。可胡兰成偏偏做不到这一点，他自诩为大观园里的宝玉，对世间女儿皆怀一份慈悲怜惜之心。有人说《今生今世》就是胡兰成的一部“群芳谱”，以如此婉媚之笔为自己泛滥成灾的情欲谱写一本“群芳谱”，也真是难为这个在红粉阵里流连的男人。无奈每一个被他“怜惜懂得”的女人遇见他都变得很低很低，她们都和张爱玲一样愿意为他低到尘埃里。据说晚年的胡兰成在台湾讲学，他的女弟子还为他分作两派，为他争风吃醋。真是让人惊奇又生气，但又不得不佩服这个男人的魅力。
胡兰成年纪大张爱玲十五岁，在与张爱玲相遇之前，他已在自己的人生舞台上混得风生水起。有满腹的才华与学问，写一手漂亮的文章与书法，又满怀一腔雄才大略，加上年轻气盛，在当时的报纸上，胡兰成的名字频频出现。他写的那些时局评论，文笔犀利泼辣，很是吸引读者和一些当权政要的眼球。
一九三六年，他在《柳州日报》上的一篇政论却给他带来了麻烦。因为那篇政论，胡兰成被桂系第四集团军的司令部监禁了三十三天。福祸相倚，更大的机会也随之而来——胡兰成在报纸上发表的那些亲日言论，引起了当时同道者甚少的汪精卫的目光，汪精卫视胡兰成为一不可多得的人才，胡兰成也因此由一名普通的中学教师摇身一变升为汪精卫的机要秘书，从此走上了御用文人的道路。
《中华日报》是汪精卫的喉舌报，胡兰成于一九三七年四月被聘为《中华日报》的总主笔。那两年，在这份亲日派的报纸上，那些洋洋洒洒的社论几乎全出自这位才子之手。一九三八年初，他又被调到香港《南华日报》任总主笔，用笔名流沙撰写社论。一九四〇年汪伪政府成立，胡兰成一路扶摇直上，任汪伪宣传部常务副部长、法制局长、《大楚报》主笔，很是风光了一阵子。后来，不知何故，这位在汪手下红极一时的才子竟然惹怒了主子，于一九四三年十二月被汪精卫收押起来。胡兰成到底也是风里浪里闯过来的人，虽在汪精卫处失宠，但他早已攀上了更大的主子——他直接与日本的军政要人联系上了。大主子出面，汪精卫只得乖乖将胡兰成放出来，但二人之间的罅隙却已无法弥补。
那时，对于胡兰成这个人，爱玲还是一片朦胧而陌生的，但不是一无所知。她从好友苏青那里，时常听到这个人的名字，知他是一个才华了得的男人，文章写得极好，至于其他，他的政治抱负、他的仕途，她一概不知，或许是苏青在跟她讲时就刻意略了去。对政治，胡兰成是糊涂，爱玲是根本就不在意，她是活在文字围城、活在自我世界里的人。
可她却为这个不识的男人，做过一件她想都不曾想过的事。听苏青说胡兰成被收押，她陪苏青到汪精卫的另一同道周佛海家，为他说情。是欣赏？是同情？还是冥冥之中的命定？等后来二人相识相恋，闺阁中执手说起这一段，爱玲既吃惊又后怕，她才知她们当时去求的人就是要置胡兰成于死地的人。胡兰成则是感动不已，人生低谷，众叛亲离，难得红尘中还有如此如花娇娘，在为他呼号奔走，而且那时他们根本不认识。
就是这样一个政治上“糊涂”、感情上“混乱”的胡兰成，还是一步一步走进张爱玲的生命。
