《吕志和传》：
1998年，凭藉在美国拥有及管理超过20家星级酒店的良好业绩，吕志和被美国权威酒店杂志评选为全美12大酒店业主之一。
全美12大，这是华人在美国酒店业的最好成绩单。这个成绩源于吕志和跨国经营的成功实施，更是一个中国家族历经四代的美国奋斗。
1929年生于广东江门的吕志和，在与美国的紧密相关中长大。清光绪十一年，即1885年的11月7日，第一条横贯北美大陆的铁路——太平洋铁路（Pacific Railway）由八名华工铺设完成最后一根铁轨，掀开美国历史的新一页。也是在这一年，吕志和的曾祖父穿越超过64％死亡率的生死线，克服重重困难险阻，站到了美国土地上。成为一名新华工，翻开一个家族的新篇章。
被称为“中国第一侨乡”的江门，人杰地灵，名人辈出。明末著名理学家、教育家陈白沙；近代维新派代表人物梁启超：民主革命先驱陈少白；中国首位飞行师冯如；著名侨领司徒美堂等都是江门走出去的代表性人物。当然，今天这份名单上已增加一个新名字：世界级富豪企业家吕志和。
富有开拓精神的江门人，也是中国人走向与融人世界舞台的先驱。被称为江门五邑的新会、台山、恩平、开平、鹤山，早于唐代就已有人出洋。漂洋过海走出去的江门人，在世界与故土之间的辗转往返，以及回到故里对外面世界的描述和讲解，拓展了家乡人们的视界，也鼓舞了他们闯荡世界的勇气。
晚清时代的中国，政治黑暗，列强环伺，民族受凌，社会动荡，民不聊生。越来越多江门人踏上了这忍受背井离乡之痛。却也是逃离苦海，改写命运的飘泊奋斗之旅。在太平洋铁路的华工队伍中，来自江门五邑的华工就担当着绝对的主力。吕志和的曾祖父吕德盈，这位令吕志和钦佩并无限怀念的家族基业拓荒者。正是在此背景下，漂洋过海，到新大陆谋求命运的逆转。
“乡音无改鬓毛衰”的衣锦还乡背后，是“少小离家老大回”的奋斗艰辛。吕德盈决心前往美国时才不过15岁。这是一趟以生命改变命运的冒险之旅。根据有关描述，当时，成百上千被称为“猪仔”的华工，像罐头里的沙丁鱼，一个挨一个地被“装载”在船舱运往美国。在近百天喊天不应、喊地不灵的海上跋涉里，许多人客死路途。
吕德盈从在加州一家农场做劳工开始了在美国的打拚。当时，美国华工每月工资约为30美元，比白人便宜将近一半，但相对中国内地农民每月一美元的收入而言，已是值得拚命的大好机会。
吕德盈努力节约下每一分可以省下的钱，储蓄下来，或托人穿越重洋带到江门家中，或在无人可托时通过邮局寄回家乡，用以支撑故乡家人的生活。在美国奋斗多年后，吕德盈才第一次回到家乡。当时的情形已无人可还原再现，但吕志和至今还清晰记得一个关于曾祖父首次回乡的传说：大家都认为他由旧金山回来，一定是衣锦还乡，财丰物盛。但打开他的箱子，只是些破旧衣服，完全没有人们想象，甚至期待中的“高档”物件或真金白银。
