董仲舒（前179－前104）为西汉哲学家，经学大师，广川（今河北枣强东）人。少年时专治《春秋》，景帝时为博士，潜心钻研孔子学说。汉武帝时，召试天下贤良之士，他以“天人三策”相对，要求汉武帝罢黜百家，独尊儒术，为汉武帝采纳，开此后二千余年封建社会以儒学为正统的局面。他的学说以儒家宗法思想为中心，杂以阴阳五行说，把神权、君权，父权、夫权贯穿在一起，形成封建神学体系。本书以汉代为背景，详尽讲述了董仲舒的一生和思想，及其对当时代和中国历史的影响。

马勇，1956年生，安徽濉溪人。中国社会科学院近代史研究所研究员、中国社会科学院研究生院教授、博士生导师。
所著《汉代春秋学研究》（四川人民出版社1990年），1992年获中国社会科学院第一届青年优秀成果专著类二等奖；《梁漱溟评传》（安徽人民出版社1992年），1992年获华东地区优秀政治理论读物一等奖，1995年获中国社会科学院第二届青年优秀成果专家提名奖；《中国现代化历程》（第一副主编，江苏人民出版社2001年），该书获近代史所一等奖、中国社会科学院一等奖、第六届国家图书奖、郭沫若历史学奖等；《从维新运动到义和团》（《中国近代通史》第四卷，江苏人民出版社2006年），获新闻出版总署首届“三个一百”原创工程奖、中国社会科学院成果奖及第七届国家图书奖等；所著《1911年中国大革命》获广东南方阅读盛典2011年“最受关注历史类图书”奖、《中华读书报》评为“2011年十大好书”、“2012书业发展论坛十大好书”、《中国图书评论》2011年度优秀图书等。

题记
时间过得真快，为董仲舒作传一晃三十年了。现在承东方出版社好意，有机会再版，趁此交代这本小书写作缘起。
1983年，我从安徽大学历史系毕业考进复旦大学历史系，师从朱维铮先生研习中国文化史。那时朱老师学术重心在经学史，因而我的阅读大致围绕着经学史、学术史。
思考毕业论文选题时，朱老师让我根据自己的阅读、兴趣设计不少于三个题目，然后一起讨论选定一个。我那时正在读前四史、先秦诸子、秦汉学术，我提交的三个题目是：《董仲舒思想研究》、《三礼研究》及《汉代春秋学研究》。经朱老师指点，选定《汉代春秋学研究》，舍弃了董仲舒和三礼。
我没有将董仲舒作为学位论文去处理，但我对董仲舒的阅读、思考并没有就此结束。在那之前我仔细读过《春秋繁露》及《汉书》中的相关史料，我觉得董仲舒是中国思想史上的一个关键，值得研究。所以在读书期间我写有董仲舒思想研究初稿，毕业后偶有所得，也不忘继续思考、写作。我对董仲舒的看法大致在这样几点：
第一，董仲舒思想是到当时为止前人思想的汇集、总结、重构。读《春秋繁露》，很容易感觉先秦诸子各家各派思想、学术融为一炉，重构了一个全新的思想体系。
第二，董仲舒并不只是一个书斋里的思想者，他对社会、政治的关怀、思考，成就了他的思想体系。读董仲舒“天人三策”，我觉得那是中国两千年帝制时代最伟大的文件之一，董仲舒比较完美地创建了以天子为中心的“天人合一”模式。在人世间，天子为世俗之主，最大。但天子又是“天之子”，听命于天，而“天”，在董仲舒的设计中，又是民意的表示。如此往复循环，终于容纳了灾异说、谴告说、天人感应说。在近代科学出现前，董仲舒的这些理论自有其意义。
第三，董仲舒的时代，是帝制时代形成期。在经历了秦王朝二世而亡，经历了汉初动荡、文景之治后，汉武帝确实希望能有一番作为，董仲舒为此贡献了自己的智慧。在“天人三策”、《春秋繁露》中，董仲舒为帝制中国制度设计提供了自己的方案，这个方案，包括“罢黜百家，独尊儒术”，可能在后世有很多值得检讨的地方，但在当时，在帝制初期，其意义并不容低估。
基于这些认识，我在1990年代初写出初稿，也曾在几家出版社传观，但直至河北人民出版社李大星先生策划“大儒系列”，这本小书才于2000年初版面世。翌年（2001年），香港中华书局出版了我的《董仲舒》简写本。又过了几年，中国社会出版社将河北人民出版社全本再版，改题《董仲舒评传》。此次东方出版社新版基本依据初版本。
