英文版序言（1996）
Encyclopedia（百科全书）一词源自希腊文，意思是“全面教育”。《牛津少年儿童百科全书》旨在提供地理、科技、体育、历史、宗教、音乐、美术等各门学科和人物、有闲诸方面的基础知识，应有尽有，内容扎实。
现今世界瞬息万变，变化之快史无前例。《牛津少年儿童百科全书》五年前问世以来，海峡隧道把英国与欧洲大陆连接起来；马其顿和厄立特里亚成为独立国家；南非人民第一次参加自由选举。90年代初不大普及的国际互联网络、虚拟真实，以及无数其他新事物，现在已成为报纸、电视每天谈论的话题。
无论寻找什么学科的资料，应首先查阅百科全书。世界日新月异，百科全书也应与时代并进。
变与不变
《牛津少年儿童百科全书》新版的基本架构保持不变，跟初版相同。每卷内各词条按英语字母次序排列，并非根据学科分门别类。图书馆管理员、教师、家长、少年儿童等许多读者认为，词条按英语字母次序排列比按学科分类容易查阅。例如查阅Radio（无线电）时，直接打开字母R那一卷比较方便，先思索这条是收在通讯那一卷还是科学那一卷反而花时间。（请参阅“如何使用《牛津少年儿童百科全书》”这一栏—译者）
虽然以上原则保持不变，但新版的修订十分全面：新增了两卷和百分之十的词条；平均每三条有一条重写；四分之一以上的照片是新增的；传记篇的条目也重新修订。
与时代并进
初版的条目由专家顾问挑选，历时数月。除了专家外，还征询了少的儿童的意见。调查结果发现，不少人对科技感兴趣，因此初版收录了许多详尽的科技词条。斟酌专家的推荐和少年儿童的爱好后，才选定初版的条目。
为了反映初版问世以来世界发生的变化，我们邀请40位顾问提供意见，指出初版文字和图片的不足之处，以及应增补的词条。例如，泰勒（Charles Taylor）和波普尔（Stephen Pople）两位科学家审阅过全书有关科技的词条，指出可补充什么词条、应修订的部分、应增加哪些篇幅。我们也收一来自澳大利亚、加拿大、日本、新西兰和其他国家的报告。审阅全书后，决定增加原有450条的篇幅。此外新增150条，大多包括动物权利、全球气候变暖等大众关注的课题，以及遗传工程、多媒体等科技题材。
新版的计划拟定后，百科全书的作者由原来的100人增加到约130人，使写作新版的计划得以落实。
照片和插图
审阅文字时，我们也审阅了图片，考虑它们是否需要更换、能否配合内容。新版保留了初版最理想的照片，还增加了500幅。新照片都是从世界各地的图片经销处、博物馆、美术馆搜罗的。新版也更换并增加了许多插图。国家的名字和新疆经常变化，因此新版中许多地图作了更新和修订。
发掘新知识
九卷百科全书当然不能包含一切人类知识。即使出版一套90卷的百科全书，也只能管窥人类的全貌而已。《牛津少年儿童百科全书》旨在提供一个起点，从这个起点出发，读者可以找到感兴趣的资料。查阅资料时，读者会发现无数意想不到、引人入胜的事物。我们盼望读者从《牛津少年儿童百科全书》出发，追求影响浣、令人兴奋的新知识，盼望《牛津少年儿童百科全书》成为读者接受“全面教育”的起点。
