Book Abstract

文学家的造就文学家在人群里，好比朗耀的星辰－，明丽的花草，神幻的图画，微妙的音乐。这空洞洞的世界，要他们来点缀：要他们来描写。这干燥的空气，要他们来调和。这机械的生活，要他们来慰藉。他们是人群的需要！假如人群中不产生出若干的文学家，我们可以断定我们的生活，是没有趣味的。我们的感情，是不能融合的。我们的前途，是得不着光明的。然而人群中的确已产生出若干的文学家，零零落落的点缀在古今中外的历史上，看：人类对于他们，是怎样的惊慕，赞美，崇拜！“天才，天才！”“得天独厚”“异才天赋”，我们往往将这等的名词，加在他们身上。现在呢？这等迷信的话，已经过去了。我们对于文学的天才，只有同情的崇拜，没有神秘的崇拜；我们只信天才是在生理心理两方面，比较的适合于他的艺术；并不是所谓“文曲下凡”等等鄙俚的说法。
然而是否人人都可以成为文学家，这也是一个疑问。
细细的研究起来，这文学家的造就，原因很复杂，关系也很长远；不是一两句话可以包括过来的。现在姑且以文学家的本身作根据地，纵剖面是遗传，横剖面是环境，怎样的遗传和怎样的环境，是容易造就出文学家的，我们大概可以胪举如下：（一）文学家的父母——稍远些可以说祖先——要有些近于文学的嗜好。这并不是说小说家的父母，也一定要是小说家，诗人的父母，也一定要是诗人，——要是这样，这文学家竞成世袭的，门阀的，还有什么造就可言？——只要他们有些近于文学性质的嗜好，如喜欢花木，禽鱼，音乐，图画，有绵密沉远的心胸，纯正高尚的信仰，或是他们的思想，很带有诗情画意的。这样，他们的子女，成为文学家，就比较的容易些。这就是所谓“得天独厚”，“异才天赋”了。
（二）文学家要生在气候适宜，山川秀美，或是雄壮的地方。文学家的作品，和他生长的地方，有密切的关系。——如同小说家的小说，诗家的诗，戏剧家的戏剧，都浓厚的含着本地风光——他文学的特质，有时可以完全由地理造成。这样，文学家要是生在适宜的地方，受了无形中的陶冶熔铸，可以使他的出品，特别的温柔敦厚，或是豪壮悱恻。与他的人格，和艺术的价值，是很有关系的。
（三）文学家要生在中流社会的家庭——就是不贫不富的家庭。克鲁泡特金说：“物质的欲望，既然已经满足了，艺术的欲望，自然要涌激而出。”自然生在富豪之家，有时夺于豪侈禄利，酒食征逐，他的理智，都被禁锢蒙蔽住了，不容易有机会去发挥他的天才。但是生在贫寒家里，又须忙于谋求生计，不能受完美的教育。即或是他的文学，已经有了根基，假如他一日不做小说，一日不编戏剧，就一日没有饭吃，这样，他的作品，只是仓猝急就，以糊口为目的，不是以贡献艺术为目的，结果必至愈趋愈下。俄国文豪陀斯妥耶夫斯基曾说过：“我固然是不如屠格涅夫（也是俄国的文豪，和他同时的），然而并不是我真不如他，我何尝不愿意精心结撰，和他争胜，……无奈贫乏逼我，不得不急求完工得钱，结果我的作品，就一天劣似一天。”又有尼司壁做的两首诗的断句，如下：——全诗见《社会主义的歌谣与抒情诗》（照录《少年中国》译语）：那手民现在就等着我的稿，我连下星期的酬金都到了手，但是我若不做便一文都没有，上帝呵叫我如何做？我不会再做了，咳，上帝，使一家嗷嗷的，全靠着我一枝笔，偏生我又一行都不能写，这也像是神圣的爱么？于此可知以文学为职业的人的景况，是如何的艰苦，于他的艺术上，是如何的受亏损。虽然是说穷愁之词易工，然而主观的穷愁，易陷于抑郁牢骚，不能得性情之正。虽可以博得读者的眼泪和同情，究竟不是促进文学的一种工具。所以最适宜于产生文学家的家庭，就是中流社会的家庭。既然不必顾虑到衣食谋求到生计，一面他自己可以受完全的教育。他的著作，是“须其自来，不以力构”的，自然就比较的浓厚活泼了。
此外家庭里的空气，也很有关系。文学家生在清静和美的家庭，他的脑筋永远是温美平淡的，不至于受什么重大的刺激扰乱，使他的心思有所偏倚。自然在他的艺术上，要添上多少的“真”和“美”。
（四）文学家要多读古今中外属于文学的作品。
这就是造成文学家的第一步了，他既有了偏于文学的嗜好，也必须多读属于文学的作品。读的愈多，机局愈精熟，材料愈方便，思想愈活泼。而久之，必能独辟蹊径，自成一家。——以蚕蛾作比喻，在它成蚕的时候，整天里沙沙的只顾食叶，时候到了，身体透明了，便将几十天内所食的叶子，牵成有条不紊的长丝，也将他自己隐在里面，好比雏形的文学家，读破万卷，心中光明透澈，将百家之说，融化成有系统的思想，也将他自己濡浸在里面，然而他是不能永久拘囚在里面的；也要和蚕蛾一般，白衣如雪，咬破茧丝，飞了出去。我们可以看假如蚕儿当初不肯食叶，不但以后不能抽丝，不能作茧，不能成蛾；而且要立刻僵死的。所以即或是个人有偏于文学的嗜好，若不肯多研究属于文学的书籍，他的思想终久是要破产，终久不能勉强造成一个文学家。
