Author Description

埃里克·凯利（1884—1960年），美国著名儿童文学作家，曾任美国达特茅斯学院英语系教授。1925年，他来到了波兰，在克拉科夫大学担任了一年讲师。就在这短暂而珍贵的一年里，他深深地爱上了古老而美丽的克拉科夫城。他在城中漫步、游走，在图书中查阅资料，最终为这座古城以及城中流传的圣母玛利亚教堂吹号手的传说，写下了这样一个精彩的冒险故事。1929年，埃里克凭借这部优秀的《吹号手的诺言》摘取了纽伯瑞儿童文学奖金奖的桂冠，为世人留下了一部经典之作。

彼得冲到门口，猛地停住脚步，惊得目瞪口呆。
红色的火球不停地从阁楼的窗户里冒出来，咔啦啦地响着，将四周照得通明。借着光，彼得看见无论是守在楼梯口的那四个人，还是守在门口的四个，全都吓傻了。在他身后捉住斯塔斯的那几个人，看见火球也收了手，让斯塔斯趁机悄悄地从他们的腿边爬走，逃下楼去了。
彼得已经六神无主。要说打架，他是一等一的勇敢，可是面对神奇的法术，他却只好当一个缩头乌龟。但他虽然吓得浑身哆嗦，可还留存有一丝理智，明白自己若想保住在手下当中的威信，就必须做得像条汉子。所以他勉强鼓起最后一点勇气，噔噔噔地从二楼跑上了三楼，刚好又一个火球喷了出来。
“回来！回来！”他的手下在底下喊道。
“上来！上来！”他命令道，“你们怕个鬼啊？”
“上面有魔鬼！”
彼得在黑暗中挥动自己的哥萨克弯剑。“上来！上来！你们这群胆小鬼，上来，不然我砍掉你们的头。上来，我说，上——来！”
他的样子很恐怖，吓得站在二楼的三个人不约而同在胸前划了个十字，这才爬上楼。
“反正宝贝已经拿到了。”离他最近的一个声音颤抖着说，“我们赶紧逃命吧。这不是人，是魔鬼在作祟。魔鬼降临，收走了人的魂魄。”
“魔鬼？”彼得吼道，“一派胡言！你，过来，要有个男人的样子。这根本不是魔鬼，不过是个不想要脑袋的小丑。如果我们现在不去干掉他，那还没等我们出城，全城的人就都知道这件事了。”
“上去！”他喘口气命令道，同时将第一个人推上阁楼的楼梯，“上去，把里面的情况汇报给我。”
那人不情不愿地往上蹭，腿哆嗦得厉害，他相信楼上与他们对抗的是魔鬼的力量。“门是开着的，”他弯腰小声地对楼下的彼得说，“没有灯。”
“那就进去呀！”彼得命令道，“里面就一个人，你进去割断他的喉咙，然后快点下来就行了。”
其他人也都陆续爬上阁楼。彼得不耐烦地等了几分钟，不见有人下来，他干脆自己进去一探究竟。
“你们有什么发现？”他急躁地问。
“什么都没有。”从阁楼的一角传来弱弱的回答声。
