尼·奥期特洛夫斯，是苏联一个普通的工人、红军战士。《钢铁是怎样炼成的》一书中的大量情节就取材于他自身的经历。他同小说主人公一样，年幼失学，参加过战争，后来也是双目失明，全身瘫痪。在身陷绝境的情况下，他开始创作小说，后来他连笔也拿不动了，就靠口述，请亲友笔录，历时三年，克服了难以想象的困难，终于创作出这部不朽的杰作。由于小说影响巨大，苏联政府还授予他列宁勋章。

Book Abstract

“节前去我家补考的，都给我站起来！”
脸皮松弛的神甫瓦西里，身上穿着法衣，脖子上挂着沉甸甸的十字架，恶狠狠地瞪着全班学生。一时间，班上的学生们吓得连大气都不敢出。
只见六个学生应声从板凳上站了起来，其中有四个男生、两个女生。孩子们全都惊恐不安地望着神甫，但谁也不敢直视他那双射出凶光的小眼睛，因为他们感觉神甫像是要一口把他们吞下去似的。
“你们坐下。”神甫朝两个女孩子挥挥手，不耐烦地说道。两个女孩子立刻松了口气，赶忙坐下了。
接着，瓦西里神甫推开椅子，走到挤作一团的四个男孩子跟前，死死地盯着他们，问道：“你们这几个小无赖，谁抽烟？”
四个孩子都小声回答：“我们不会抽，神甫。”
“混账东西，不会抽，那发面里的烟末是谁撒的？”一想到他家里那团被撒了烟末的发面，神甫就气不打一处来。
“把口袋翻过来，快点！听见了没有？快翻过来！”神甫大声呵斥道。
有三个孩子把自己口袋里的东西掏出来，放在了桌子上。
神甫仔细地检查了这三个男孩口袋的每一条缝，但什么也没有找到。最后，他把目光转到第四个孩子身上。这个孩子长着一双黑亮的眼睛，穿着灰衬衣和一条打着补丁的裤子。他的名字叫保尔。
“你怎么像个木头人，站着不动弹？”神甫质问他。
保尔看着神甫，闷声闷气地回答：“我没有口袋。”说完，他用手摸摸身上缝死了的袋口。
“哼，衣服上没有口袋？别耍小聪明啦！你以为这么一来，我就不知道是谁把发面糟蹋了吗？你以为这回你还能在学校待下去吗？这回无论是谁给求情都不管用了！坏小子，你给我滚出去！”神甫使劲揪住保尔的一只耳朵，把他推到走廊上。随即，门“砰”地一声被关上了。
学生们全都被吓坏了，他们当中除了保尔的好朋友谢廖沙外，谁也不明白保尔为什么会被赶出教室。
事情原来是这样的。那天，他们六个考试不及格的学生去神甫家里补考。在神甫家的厨房里等神甫的时候，谢廖沙和保尔乘大家不注意，偷偷地将一把烟末撤在他家过复活节用的发面里。
保尔被赶了出来，一个人坐在教室门口最下面一级台阶上。他有点发愁怎么向母亲交代，因为他深知母亲每天劳累着，为他操碎了心。
“现在我可怎么办呢？都是谢廖沙出的馊主意，现在他倒没事，我可说不定要给撵出学校了。可恶的神甫……”
原来，保尔跟神甫早就结下了仇。有一回，他和班上的同学打架，老师罚他留校，不准他回家吃饭。老师怕这个淘气鬼在空教室里胡闹，就把他送到高年级教室，让他坐在教室后面的椅子上，免得再生事端。
高年级老师正在给学生们讲银河系、地球和天体，他说星星和地球已经存在好几百万年了。坐在后面的保尔听后，惊讶得张大了嘴巴，他差点站起来对老师说‘《圣经》上可不是这么说的”。
保尔的母亲是教徒，常给他讲《圣经》上的道理。所以，他一直认为世界是上帝创造的，而且时间也没有几百万年那么长。教《圣经》这门课的瓦西里神甫总是给保尔打满分，因为《新约》、《旧约》和所有的祈祷词保尔都背得滚瓜烂熟。于是，保尔打定主意，要向神甫问个明白。
等到上《圣经》课的时候，保尔就提出了心中的疑问：“神甫，为什么高年级老师说，地球已经存在好几百万年了，并不像《圣经》上说的五千……”
他刚说到这里，就被神甫的尖叫声打断了：“混账东西，你在胡说什么？《圣经》课我是怎么教你的？”
不容保尔辩解，神甫就揪住他的两只耳朵，摁住他的头使劲往墙上撞。接着，神甫把保尔推到了走廊上，不准他接着上《圣经》课。
第二天，母亲到学校去恳求瓦西里神甫开恩，让她儿子回班学习。从那时起，保尔就恨透了神甫。
此后，保尔又受到瓦西里神甫多次小的侮辱：往往为了一些鸡毛蒜皮的小事，神甫就把他赶出教室，天天罚他站墙角，还从来不过问他的功课。因此，保尔不得不和几个不及格的同学一起到神甫家里补考。那天，他在谢廖沙的怂恿下，趁别人不注意，采取了报复行动。可神甫马上就猜出了是谁干的。
不久，学校也为此事把保尔赶了出去。离开学校后，母亲带着保尔来到车站食堂找工作。面色苍白的老板上了年纪，他用无神的双眼朝站在一旁的保尔瞥了一下。
“他几岁了？”老板冷冷地问。
“十二岁。”保尔的母亲回答。
“行啊，让他留下吧，可不准偷东西。”
“哪儿能呢，哪儿能呢，我担保他什么也不偷。”母亲惶恐地说。
“那让他今天就上工吧。”。老板吩咐着，转过身去，对旁边的女招待说：“济娜，把这个小伙计领到洗刷间去，叫弗罗霞给他派活。”
女招待朝保尔点了点头，就穿过餐室，朝通向洗刷间的旁门走去。保尔抬起脚，准备跟着她走。这时，母亲悄悄拉了拉保尔的衣角，小声嘱咐道：“保尔，你可要好好干哪，别丢脸！”保尔点点头，赶紧向走出很远的女招待追去。保尔的母亲站在后面，忧郁而担心地目送着儿子进了洗刷间。
洗刷间里正忙得不可开交。桌子上盘碟刀叉堆得像座小山，几个女工肩头搭着毛巾，在逐个地擦那堆东西。满屋子像是下了大雾，保尔刚进来，连女工们的脸都看不清。
女招待济娜走到一个正在洗家什的女工跟前说：“弗罗霞，这个新来的小伙计是派给你的。”
济娜又指着那个叫弗罗霞的女工，对保尔说：“她是这儿的领班，她叫你干什么，你就干什么。”
