Author Description

奥斯卡·王尔德（Oscar Wilde，1854-1900），英国作家、戏剧家、诗人，19世纪与萧伯纳齐名的英国才子。作为诗人，年仅24岁时，他的诗作就荣获大奖；作为戏剧家，他写的剧本《温德米尔夫人的扇子》《理想丈夫》等都是一时绝唱。但他事业的起飞，风格的形成却是源于童话。他的第一本童话集《快乐王子》问世后，人们才真正将他视为有影响力的作家。英国《典雅》杂志将他和安徒生相提并论：说《自私的巨人》堪称“完美之作”，整木童话集更是纯正英语的结晶。
王尔德的一生经历了大起大落，时而如日中天，时而一落千丈。现实对这位“唯美主义”大师提出了严峻的考验，在1900年11月30日，生活的磨难击垮了这位文学天才，贫困潦倒的他存巴黎溘然长逝，享年46岁。

快乐王子
在高高的城市上窄，快乐王子的塑像伫立在一报顶天立地的柱子上。他周身贴满了赤金叶子，眼睛里镶嵌着两颗晶莹的蓝宝石，他的佩剑的剑柄上镶着一颗闪烁着光芒的红宝石。
的确，他很受人敬仰。“他就像风向标一样美丽。”一位一心想要附庸风雅的议员评价道。“只可惜没有什么用处。”他又加了一句，唯恐别人会认为他不讲究实际，不过他确实是一个非常务实的人。
“为什么你小像快乐王子呢？”一位明事理的母亲对自己无理取闹的孩子说道，“你瞧，快乐王子从来不会为了一点小事而哭闹。”
“真高兴这个世界上还有人过得如此幸福。”一个心情沮丧的人凝视着这尊快乐的塑像，喃喃自语道。
“他看上去像一个天使。”一群孤儿院的孩子们说。他们身着鲜红色的斗篷，脖颈上系着洁白的围嘴，正从大教堂向外走。
“你们是如何得知的？”呆板的校长问道，“你们又没有见过天使的相貌。”
“哦！但是我们看见过，在梦里。”孩子们回答道。呆板的校长皱起眉头，一脸严肃，因为他极不赞成孩子们做梦。
一天晚上，城市里飞过来一只小燕子。他的朋友们在六个星期前就已经飞往埃及了，他却留了下来，因为他与那枝最美丽的芦苇相爱了。他是在早春时节遇到她的，当时，他追赶着一只大黄蛾飞到了河边，突然就被她的纤纤细腰吸引住了，忍不住停下来和她交谈起来。
“我能爱你吗？”燕子问道，他喜欢有话直说。听到他的话，芦苇深深地点了点头。因此，小燕子绕着她不停地飞啊飞，用翅膀轻点水面，激起了一圈圈银色的涟漪。这就是他的求婚活动，持续了整整一个夏天。
“这简直是一场荒唐的恋爱，”其他燕子喋喋不休地说，“那枝芦苇身无分文，亲戚倒是一大堆。”的确，河里长满了芦苇，望也望不到头。秋天来临，他们全都飞走了。

“原来你一直在和我调情玩啊，”他叫嚷着，“我要到金字塔去了，再见！”说着便飞走了。
他飞了一整天，在天黑的时候来到了这座城市。“我该到哪里寄宿呢？”他说，“希望这座城市事先有所准备。”
于是，他看到了那座高大的柱子上的塑像。
“我就在那里安身吧，”他叫着，“那是一个好地方，到处都是清新的空气。”因此，他降落在快乐王子的双脚之间了。
“这一回，我住进黄金屋了。”他环视四周，悄悄地对自己说，接着打算睡觉。然而，正当他要把脑袋缩进翅膀底下时，一大滴水掉落在他的身上。“真是奇怪啊！”他叫道，“天空中没有一丝云彩，星星也亮得耀眼，怎么竟然下起雨来了？欧洲北部的天气真是太令人恐怖了。芦苇向来和雨分不开，然而那只是出于对自身的考虑。”

“假如一尊大塑像连一点雨都遮挡不住，那它还有什么用处？”他说，“我只能去找一个好的烟囱躲一躲了。”于是，他打算飞往别处。

“我活着的时候，有一颗平常人的心。”塑像答道，“那个时候，我不知道泪水为何物，因为我住在逍遥宫里，那是一个忧愁无法进入的地方。白天，我和我的同伴们在花园里玩耍，到了晚上，我就在大厅里领舞。花园的四周是高大的围墙，而我却对围墙外面的景象漠不关心。周围的一切是那么美妙，无与伦比。臣子们都叫我‘快乐王子’，的确，假如快乐就是幸福的话，我很幸福。就这样，我活了一辈子，又这样死去了。我死后，他们把我安放在这高高的地方，就这样，我看到了这座城市里所有的丑陋和苦难。尽管我的心脏是铅做的，却仍然忍不住哭了起来。”

“远处，”塑像继续用他那音乐般轻柔的嗓音说，“在远处的一条小街上，有一座破旧的房子。房子的窗户开着，透过窗户，我看到一个女人正坐在桌子旁边。她的脸消瘦而憔悴，双手通红而粗糙，还布满了针眼，因为她是一个针线工。她正在往一件缎子外衣上绣西番莲，以便让女王最可爱的宫女穿着它参加下一次的宫廷舞会。在屋子角落的床上，躺着她生病的孩子。他正在发烧，吵着要橘子吃。然而他的母亲只能给他喝河水，因此他就不停地哭。燕子，燕子，小燕子啊，你可不可以把我剑柄端上的红宝石衔去给她呢？我的脚被固定在了这个底座上，无法动弹啊。”

“我不喜欢小男孩，”燕子回答道，“去年夏天，当我停在河边的时候，两个野蛮的男孩，就是磨坊主的儿子，他们就用石头砸我。当然，他们永远不会砸到我，我们燕子的飞行速度是很快的。而且，我出身一个身手矫捷的家族。不过话说回来，用石头砸人总是卑劣的。”
快乐王子看起来伤心极了，小燕子感到很抱歉。“这个地方太冷了，”他说，“但是，我会和你待一个晚上，当你的送信人。”

“但愿我的新衣服能在这次盛大的舞会之前做好，”她答道，“我已经让裁缝在上面绣上两番莲了，但是她太懒了。”
他从河的上方飞过，看到船的桅杆上挂着灯笼。他从犹太居民区飞过，看到那些上了年纪的犹太人在讨价还价，用铜秤称钱呢。最后，他飞到了那所破旧的房子前，向里面望去。那个男孩躺在床上，被病痛折磨得翻来覆去，他的母亲累得精疲力竭，已经睡着了。他蹦跳着走进屋里，将嘴里的大红宝石放在女人的顶针旁边。紧接着，他轻轻地围着床飞了起来，用翅膀给小男孩的脑门扇风。“感觉凉快多了，”小男孩说，“我一定是好多了。”不一会儿，他便进入了甜蜜的梦乡。
