第一章绪言
有闲阶级制度在未开化文化下的较高阶段获得了最充分发展；封建时代的欧洲或日本就是例子。在这样的社会里，阶级的划分非常严格；在阶级差别中具有最突出的经济意义的一个特点是，各阶级的正式业务彼此之间截然不同。上层阶级按照习惯是可以脱离生产工作的，或者是被摒于生产工作之外的，是注定要从事于某些带几分荣誉性的业务的。在任何封建社会，最主要的光荣业务是战争；教士职务在光荣程度上一般认为是次于战争的。如果某一未开化社会并不怎样特殊地好战，那么在光荣程度上教士职务也许会跃居首位，而军人次之。但不管是军人也好，教士也好，上层阶级对生产工作总是置身事外的，这是他们的优势地位的经济表现——这个原则总是不变的，是很少例外的。关于这两个阶级的脱离生产工作，印度的婆罗门就是一个很好的例子。在那些处于未开化文化较高阶段的社会里，可以笼统地称作有闲阶级的那个范围内，包含着许多不同的分支阶级；随着分支阶级的不同，担任的业务也有很大差别。整个有闲阶级包含贵族阶级和教士阶级，还有两者的许多隶属分子。各阶级的业务不同，但是有一个共同的经济特点，那就是在性质上总是属于非生产的。这类非生产性的上层阶级业务，大致归纳起来是以下几项——政治、战争、宗教信仰和运动比赛。

有些场合，讨论的进行是以经济学理论或人种学通则为依据的，这在某种程度上也许会使读者感到陌生。在绪言那一章里充分说明了这类理论前提的性质，希望由此可以避免在理解上的扦格。有关的理论观点，曾在《美国社会学杂志》第四卷发表的《作业本能与劳动厌恶》、《所有权的起源》与《妇女的未开化身份》一系列论文里，作了比较详切的叙述。但这类推论的一部分是创见的；假使在读者看来，由于它缺乏根据或缺乏作为根据的事实而觉得不合，那末要晓得，本书的论点以这类部分创见的推论为依据时，并不是完全不顾到它作为经济理论中的一个细目的可能有的价值。
为了说明或加强论证而采用的一些资料，部分为了方便，部分也为了大家对于所熟悉的现象的意义发生误解的可能性比较少的缘故，所以总是尽量凭直接观察或通过尽人皆知的事物从日常生活中汲取，而不求之于更深一层的比较奥妙的来源。
