《经济全球化研究丛书：资本论的方法研究》：
对此，马克思在《导言》中说：“从实在和具体开始，从现实的前提开始，因而，例如在经济学上从作为全部社会生产行为的基础和主体的人口开始，似乎是正确的。但是，更仔细地考察起来，这是错误的。如果我抛开构成人口的阶级，人口就是一个抽象。如果我不知道这些阶级所依据的因素，如雇佣劳动、资本等等，阶级又是一句空话。而这些因素是以交换、分工、价格等等为前提的。比如资本，如果没有雇佣劳动、价值、货币、价格等等，它就什么也不是。因此，如果我从人口着手，那末这就是一个混沌的关于整体的表象，经过更切近的规定之后，我就会在分析中达到越来越简单的概念。”
不是对事实而是对概念的分析，对于马克思来说是空语，但是单纯的事实的知识也仅仅被看做是科学性的“抽象”、“空话”、“无”。对事实的分析以及从事实而分析在那里所表现的本质，这二者是马克思的分析的要件。
因此，由事实而分析到的本质究竟是什么呢？这是下一个问题。可现实性的事实常常是复杂而多元的，不能对它们进行即刻的分析。
自然科学家用显微镜和化学试剂，尽量把现实性的事实建立在纯粹化的基础上而进行真正的分析。同样，马克思在分析经济现象时，也始终进行着对它们抽象而纯化为最简单形态的准备工作。因此，我们先看这种抽象。
现在我们看《资本论》价值分析里的抽象是如何进行的。资本主义社会的商品几乎全部是作为资本所生产的商品，它们的商品价值中包含着剩余价值部分。
但是当下的问题是分析价值，即为了懂得价值是什么，那么，商品是资本所生产的、商品价值作为剩余价值的构成要素，此时不仅是没有一点关系，而且对于价值的分析来说，只会带来扰乱性的影响。
因此马克思把我们已知的资本所生产的商品做了简单商品的抽象化的处理。这种简单商品也是使用价值和价值的结合体，是有自然形态和价值形态两种形态的二重物。但在商品价值的问题上，它的使用价值的方面是没有一点关系的。考察作为这样的二重物的复杂形态的商品，只会给问题的解决带来困难，因此，要舍去商品的使用价值方面，而只考虑商品的价值这方面。
商品当然是一个具有自然形态和价值形态双重形态的二重物，因此它是一个矛盾物。这个事情毋宁说，是由马克思最早正确地把握了的，是马克思最了解的。
但当问题不在于它是否是矛盾物而是其价值是什么时，马克思就把商品抽象、单纯地作为价值来考察。而且，由此可以首先掌握价值的本性，进而科学地把握商品的二重性和矛盾性。
这样，价值的分析就在价值提供给我们的表象的现象形态上、在简单商品的交换价值这种纯化的事实上进行。
可在今天的社会，商品的价值全部表现为价格，价值形式全部用价格形式或者货币形式所代表。乍看起来，总认为价值的问题可以由这种价格的分析而得到完全的解决，但作为价值形式的最高完成形式的货币形式，即使是最符合价值本性的形式，它也并非是价值之为价值的不可或缺的条件。
并非是由货币而理解价值，相反，由价值才能理解货币。因此，货币形式也要舍去，而抽象出最单纯的、价值之为价值的绝对的必要条件的形式，这种形式当然是一种商品的价值用其它的商品的使用价值表现出来，即个别的价值形式，从而进行分析。
但是也并非就是对这种简单的价值形式作简单分析。这种价值表现的形式，一方面是表现其价值的商品，另一方面也是表现其它商品的价值的商品，一方面是在相对性价值形式上的商品，另一方面也是在等价形式上的商品。作为这样的商品，有着互相对立性的形式。为了了解什么是价值本体，没有必要涉及它的现象形态上两个商品如何受到对立的形态规定，如何发生相互关系。
