经济史学需要创新，需要把经济学的理论和方法，以及其他学科，诸如社会学的理论和方法等，运用于经济史的研究之中。但这是一个过程，需要一个一个专题的积累，一步一步的探索，不应该指望有一个理想的、从天上掉下来的馅饼，只能从现实的研究基础和研究状况，以及现实的研究人员的兴趣和知识结构出发，逐步积累和转型。这个目标不会一蹴而就。另一方面，经济史学的创新还在于历史资料的发掘和创新，理论和方法的创新要与史料的创新结合起来，取得两方面的平衡。所以经济史学需要双重创新。杜恂诚主编的《中国近代经济史概论》作为教材，并不强调第一手史料的发掘。教材更应注重介绍别人所已经取得的研究成果，并在引用时遵守学术规范。
现在已有好几所大学编写出版了经济史课程教材，有给本科生的，也有给研究生的，内容、体例不尽相同。这应该是一件好事。《中国近代经济史概论》的特色在于从纵横交织的多维视角剖析近代中国经济的发展脉络，专题覆盖领域比较宽广，各专题的写作力争贡献一些增量知识，而不是重复一些雷同的东西。《中国近代经济史概论》编者认为，对历史的理解各有差异，才能体现出各校的学科特点来。
