《学术月刊丛书：创新与演化经济学研究》：
事实上，包括新制度经济学在内的新古典经济学的分析实际上往往是自相矛盾的，因为新制度经济学对经济主体的偏好进行同质化抽象分析已经从根本上排除了选择的范围，从而个人行为已经预先机械式地被决定了，以致阿玛迪亚·森把新古典行为讽刺为“理性傻瓜”。近年来日益突起的经济演化思想则认为，人类社会的演化是根据一般的行为经验、习惯等日常惯例进行选择的，它们形成人类行为选择的价值体系。一般而言，演化主要是两种机制推动的：一个是创新机制，通过系统的创新产生多样化；一个是选择机制，即在这些多样化中进行筛选。这两者是互补的，其核心思想就是出于新奇带来的变异，这种变异是人类有目的行为的结果。
可见，尽管新制度经济学派突破了新古典经济学的“黑匣子”理论，分析了企业的具体运行过程，但是科斯等从交易费用出发分析的是静态状态下企业和市场交易费用的比较和相互转化，并没有揭示企业组织的演化过程，没有考察企业组织的异质性的发展过程。而纳尔逊和温特的经典著作《经济变迁的演化理论》借助“惯例”的概念来分析企业演化，他们认为，企业的重要性不只在于它们的生产功能，而且在于它们是评价和储存过去选择结果的一种重要组织，因而企业的决策中实际存在着若干“惯例”和“选择惯例”的行为，这种演化经济学的分析方法开始把企业看作是一个动态变化的组织机制。但是，目前的一些演化理论往往也只是考察企业组织自身的演变，而没有将企业组织视为人类社会发展过程中出现的生产组织的一种形态，没有考察企业组织是如何演化而诞生的。
实际上，正如费孝通指出的，在中国，家庭就是一个生产组织，企业组织与家庭组织具有相似的功能，两者是如何相互演化的，这才是我们要想真正揭示企业的性质的重点思路所在。要考察组织之间的转变，就只有遵循演化的思路，分析异质化的社会主体为了提高生产效率是如何进行生产组织创新的。这里，我们又要归结到协调机制是如何演变的，因为社会上各分立劳动间的协调增进是效率提高的源泉，而组织的出现和演变就是协调机制不断增进的产物。巴纳德把组织定义为“有意识地协调两个以上人的活动或力量的一个体系”，A.布朗也指出，组织就是“获得更有效而协调的努力的一种手段”。当然，组织开始是朦胧和非正式的，表现为早期生产上的类企业等的变异形态，但经过长期的历史演变，就逐渐演化成正式组织，如家庭、企业、协会、俱乐部、会社、慈善团体、教育机构、政府机关等，因此，正式组织必然是协调增进的结果。其中，正式组织在生产上的一个重要类型就是一些进行协作努力的结合体，其典型就是企业组织。根据巴纳德的看法，“人们在正式组织中进行的是有意识的、有计划的、有目的的协作”，可见，企业作为人类互动而自发形成的正式组织，它是一个以满足社会需求为目的，把人们联合起来的社会机构。
