《资源科学》是《中国工程院院士文库》之一。资源科学是自然科学、社会科学和工程技术相互交叉的边缘应用科学，它是研究自然资源与劳动力资源相互关系、资源经济系统与资源生态系统相互关系的一门综合性科学。资源科学的理论基础源于各类资源的基础学科。资源地学、资源生态学与资源经济学是资源科学的三个理论分支学科。
《资源科学》在讨论资源分类的基础上提出资源科学的学科体系，包括基础资源学、部门资源学、区域资源学，并提出“三维”框架的设想。《资源科学》共撰写16 门分支学科，包括各分支学科的定位、定义、研究对象、任务与主要内容，学科的理论基础，发展趋势等。《资源科学》将21世纪资源科学研究发展趋势概括为六个方面，并指出当前研究的热点领域是建设资源节约型经济与社会的研究和资源安全战略的研究。在资源科学体系方面阐述了发展与完善资源科学体系应包括资源科学的理论化、信息化、工程化和管理科学化等四项内容。

资源是资财之源，说详细些也就是创造社会财富的源泉。马克思主义认为创造社会财富的源泉是自然资源和劳动力资源。马克思在《资本论》中曾引用威廉·配第的话说：“劳动是财富之父，土地是财富之母。”①在这里，马克思把土地理解为能为人类社会提供生活资料和生产资料的“原始仓库”，是泛指各类自然资源的。恩格斯在《自然辩证法》一书中也明确指出：“劳动和自然界一起才是一切财富的源泉，自然界为劳动提供材料，劳动把材料变为财富。”②由此可见，只有当自然资源和劳动力资源相结合时才能成为创造社会财富的源泉，相互分离未经结合的自然资源和劳动力资源只能是潜在的资源或潜在的资源要素。
自然资源是指自然界长期演化形成的各种有用自然物，例如未开垦的土地、原始森林、草原、水流、地下矿藏以及生长在陆地和江河湖海中的野生动植物资源。劳动力资源是指人口中的劳动年龄人口。关于劳动年龄人口，世界各国没有一个统一规定，我国男劳动力年龄是l6岁至60岁，女劳动力是l6岁至55岁。劳动力是指劳动者本身具有体力和智力的总和。自然资源与劳动力资源之间的关系是人类与自然界的物质变换关系，是社会生产力的具体体现。人口与资源之间的矛盾，经济建设与资源环境之间的矛盾，归根到底，要依靠自然资源与劳动力资源的优化结合求得解决。资源作为一门科学，主要是研究特定社会制度下自然资源与劳动力资源的演化形态、性能、结构及其相互关系以及优化配置与管理的发展规律。
资源是一个涉及范围广阔，可以从各个不同角度进行研究的课题。关于资源的概念和范围，当前各界尚未达到共识。自然资源和自然资源与劳动力资源相结合创造的实物资源，均属社会物质财富，本文界定的资源范围为自然资源、实物资源以及直接参与自然资源转变为实物资源的各种社会生产要素。因此，资源包括自然资源和社会资源两大类，其中社会资源只限于劳动力、物资、资金、科技、信息等与自然资源演变有直接关系的社会生产要素。
