大的太阳能热水器生产国和消费国。我国富煤、缺油、少气，以煤炭为主的路线短期内无法改变，使煤炭成为清洁能源成为中国面对的迫在眉睫的问题。
从能源格局演变看，新型的清洁能源取代传统能源是大势所趋，能源发展轨迹和规律是从高炭走向低炭，从低效走向高效，从不清洁走向清洁，从不可持续走向可持续。开发利用水能、风能、生物质能等可再生的清洁能源资源符合能源发展的轨迹，对建立可持续的能源系统，促进国民经济发展和环境保护发挥着重大作用。大力发展清洁能源可以逐步改变传统能源消费结构，减小对能源进口的依赖度，提高能源安全性，减少温室气体排放，有效保护生态环境，促进社会经济又好又快地发展。

传统的能源分类对能源有不同的分类方法，以能量根本蕴藏方式的不同划分，可将能源分为以下三类：
第一类能源是来自地球以外的太阳能。人类现在使用的能量主要来自太阳能，故太阳有“能源之母”的叫法。现在，除了直接利用太阳的辐射能之外，还要大量间接地使用太阳能源。例如，目前使用最多的煤、石油、天然气等化石资源，就是千百万年前绿色植物在阳光照射下经光合作用形成有机质而长成的根茎及食用它们的动物遗骸，在漫长的地质变迁中所形成的。此外譬如生物质能、流水能、风能、海洋能、雷电等，也都是由太阳能经过某些方式转换而形成的。
第二类能源是地球自身蕴藏的能量。这里主要是指地热能资源以及原子能燃料，还包括地震、火山喷发和温泉等自然呈现出的能量。据估算，地球以地下热水和地热蒸汽形式储存的能量，是煤储能的1亿多倍。地热能是地球内放射性元素衰变辐射的粒子或射线所携带的能量。此外，地球上的核裂变燃料（铀、钍）和核聚变燃料（氘、氚）是原子能的储存体。即使将来每年耗能比现在多1000倍，这些核燃料也足够人类用100亿年。
