Book Abstract

赎罪日是犹太历中最重要的日子，因为犹太人在这一天将完全脱离尘俗世界进行全心全意的沉思、忏悔和祈祷。埃及和叙利亚的领导人共同密谋在1973年10月6日即赎罪日当天对以色列发动一场突袭。在之前两次出席战争动员大会的时候，埃及总统萨达特都设下了骗局，因而引起了以色列相当大的反应。以色列参谋长公开批评这样一些无济于事的动员。更糟糕的是，华盛顿和特拉维夫对可靠的情报敷衍了事，从而使以色列在袭击的初期全无准备。这使埃及和叙利亚获得了最初的胜利，取得了在与以色列的对抗中的第一次胜利。①
对于自己在这场战争中所需要的弹药量，以色列人也作出了错误的估算。不过，在激战两天之后，以色列人断定，自己有可能被拥有大量苏联装备的阿拉伯军队打败。以色列总理梅厄夫人告诉美国总统尼克松，如果美国不马上施以援手，以色列将会灭亡。与此同时，苏联加紧补充叙利亚和埃及的装备，直接挑战尼克松关于一种苏联装备的军队决不会打败美国军队的声称。然而，这使尼克松政府陷入了进退两难的境地，因为它在这场冲突中想避免出现在以色列一边。①

Introduction
