Content Description

庆新弟的这部书，我读过初稿、二稿，也做过一点笔录。如今他要我写序，我遂整理笔记，写几句话，表示对他的祝贺和对他的专著的学术理解。
庆新这部专著的研讨对象和观点，以及史料的运用、行文的结构，我将之概述为：以翔实的资料，严密的结构，比较完整地论述明代海外贸易体制及其从传统制度向现代制度转型的某种趋势，对明代海外贸易史提出诸多原创性见解，成为富有学术价值的基础性专著。所说的创见，系指下列几个方面：
（1）明代海外贸易从传统的市舶司贸易向近代的海关贸易转化，实质是从朝贡贸易到商舶贸易的“变态”。这就是庆新在书中所说的：“明中叶国内外形势皆出现重大变化，朝贡贸易萎缩，‘弘治新例’出现，显示朝贡贸易体系正在走向崩溃，商舶贸易逐渐主导海外贸易。”
… （2）明代中后期海外贸易管理制度，在广东方面产生“广中事例”，由广州“一元中心”变为澳门、广州“二元中心”。再变为广州国际间的定期集市贸易（就此庆新名其为“交易会”，我以它近似于“广交会”之称，有现代化之嫌，建议他斟酌更改，然未有妥善之概括，附说于此）。
（3）宦官掌管的提督市舶衙门的出现，与政府的市舶司呈对峙的局面。市舶司的历史受到学者关注，而发现提督市舶衙门的存在与影响，并且论证两者权力的消长和兴衰嬗变，庆新有其功矣。
（4）明代海外贸易附属于政治的性质特别鲜明，或者说政治色彩非常强烈。用庆新的话说是：“明前期统治集团把朝贡贸易纳入重建以大明帝国为中心，以海外诸国为藩属的国际外交体系之中，成为明朝‘怀柔远人’，‘固番人心，且以强中国’的政治手段，传统的官方海外贸易被赋予政治功能而发挥到极致。”这也实现他的写作初衷：“把明代海外贸易制度变化置于明朝政治外交与经济发展以及现代世界体系的宏观视野中进行全面而系统的审视”，“挖掘制度变迁蕴藏的政治文化意义”。
（5）闽、粤海外贸易的各自特色的发现。两省在贸易管理上存在重大差别，广东方面允许外国商人上省交易，中国商人出洋往来；福建方面有“月港税制”，只准中国商人出海贸易，而不准外国商人前来通商。广东体制较为灵活，多为后来的清朝所继承，是海关制度的主要渊源。
（6）明代海外贸易出现转型趋势，有利于闽粤地区经济发展，为沿海平民提供了就业机会和谋生途径，刺激并带动相关经济部门的发展进程。如珠江三角洲等地，农业商品化生产与海外市场联系日趋密切，部分手工业生产部门出现出口导向倾向；而朝贡贸易区域，民众受差役困扰。
庆新既然讨论明代海外贸易制度的变化，而且发现它从传统向现代转型的某种趋势，逻辑的思维必然引出中国现代化的道路问题。是的，庆新特设专门章节进行研讨。他不同意“要不是西方列强的侵略，中国可以自主走出一条有别于欧洲的现代化之路’’的说法。他认为“现代化”是一个系统范畴，需要一个综合的评估体系来考察，除了经济结构之外，还应该考虑政治结构、社会结构乃至文化结构，尤其是政治结构最为关键。明中叶以降，中国社会经济确实出现某些与传统不同的新经济因素，但社会的深层结构并没有什么大的变动，政治领域更是铁板一块。所有制度调适与社会变迁，基本上属于费正清所说的“传统内的变革”。从世界范围看，16世纪以后正是“现代世界体系”的启动之时，东西方对待海洋活动与商业贸易的态度和投入呈现出巨大差异。欧洲挟其社会变革先机，在全球范围内推动资本主义：明朝仍然故步自封，拒绝完整意义上的对外开放与自由贸易，社会结构封闭，政治结构僵化，如何能够实现现代化!中国现代化是个绝大的课题，是学术界多年讨论不完的议题。庆新研究的是局部范围的专门史，原本可以不关照它，可是他要参加进去，发表自己的意见。这种学术参与的勇气和精神，令我佩服。学术观点，仁者见仁，智者见智，在争鸣中求其接近于历史实际，或者说接近于真理，不参与，怎么去“接近”。人们常说“贵在参与”，我以为用到这里是贴切的。庆新，相信你一定会以史学的求真求实精神，以勤奋和智慧，继续参加学术问题的讨论。
庆新的书，令我不能满足的是明代海外贸易主客体的客体那一方的历史的交待。讲明代海外贸易，明朝中国是一方，或者说主体一方，与明朝贸易的海外诸国、诸地区为另一方，或者说客体一方，贸易是双方的，贸易史研究，需要对双方都有了解，才能臻于完善，以此要求庆新的书，就不无遗憾了。因为对明代海外贸易的东西洋“受众”缺乏相对充实的说明，对后来的大西洋贸易“伙伴”的解说也有限。我这样说，无异于苛求庆新。确实是苛求!因为不能要求一部著作，把什么事情都讲清楚，尤其是学术界还没有研究的事情，还缺少涉猎的领域，一个人哪里能够做得到，一个人哪里能在短期内做得到!是苛求，为什么还要讲?因为我们在涉外关系的史学研究中有两个弱点，一是中外历史不能同时研究，主要是缺乏世界史的知识，因而很难达到全面性和深入性；二是以我为中心的观念（传统的，然而也是现实的），有时就不得不犯概念化与违背实际的毛病。有此想法，借庆新给我的篇幅，把它写出来，无非是共勉的意思，以求提高我的研究水准。事实上，我知道庆新在进行新的追求，他参加海上丝绸之路的课题研究，又为做“华人与东南亚社会研究”，去年春节前夕去越南，不是旅游观光，而是踏踏实实地学术考察，就是走中外历史同时研究的路子。这样做下去，怎能不会有长足的进展，怎能不会有新的学术建树贡献给学术界。
庆新做的是制度史的学问，就是要把制度原原本本剖析清楚，尽可能地复原出来。所以他在书中详细讲了明代海外贸易的主管机构——市舶司和提督市舶衙门及其主管官员和太监（难能可贵地列出人员名单），详细讲了那些具体制度，如弘治新例、广中事例、澳票制、月港体制等。所以我才说此书史料翔实，令人明了制度的产生、变化以及其实践情形。制度史是史学的基础性研究，与其相关的历史研究就离不开它，就要以它为基础，在它的上面去做深入的探讨。因此我以为，庆新的书，不仅是对明代海外贸易史研究作出成就，同时是明代中外关系史、经济史、区域史、宦官史研究的不可或缺的参考文献。

李庆新，1962年10月生，广东揭西人。文档省社会科学院历史研究所副所长、研究员，兼任广东历史学会副秘书长，广东炎黄文化研究理事，中国唐史学会、中国海交史研究会、广东青年科学家协会会员等。多年来从事唐史、中国外贸史和岭南区 域史研究，承担并主持过多项社科规划项目，参与编撰《广东百科全书》、《广东省志》等重大课题，合作编著有《广东通史》（古代上卷）、《广东盐业发展》等四部，在海内外专业旰物发表论文三十余篇，多次获广东省及广州市优秀社科成果奖、"五个一工程"奖。1993年获广东省直机关青年业务标兵称号。1997年获广东省首届优秀青年科学家奖提名奖。
