这样的物流基础设施网络化，有几个方面的特点：第一，强调物流基础设施网络的覆盖性，通过物流路线和节点规划包括物流园区和配送中心的布点，实现在一定区域内的全面覆盖；第二，强调物流空间和时间的优化，通过各类物流元素层次设计和线路节点的有效衔接、物流管理及供求信息及时传递，实现区域内物流服务时间和空间的优化；第三，更多物流要素有机组合，物流信息和相关金融支持，能提供更加强大的网络润滑与加速作用，加强物流服务的渗透能力。第四，也是最重要的，这样的物流基础设施的网络化，同时也是物流泛在性的体现，是物流泛在战略的基础性工作。目前，我国各大城市已经纷纷开始建设自己城市的物流基础设施网络，实现物流园区和配送中心的多功能节点和线路优化。在大中城市物流基础设施的基础上，我国西部、中部、东北部、东南部四大跨区域物流基础设施网络也显现出雏形。我国仍然在加强全国交通干线和客货分流线路的建设，在全国货运交通干线及国家级的各种大宗能源库和商品储备库的支撑下，未来我们还能实现全国物流基础设施网络化。全国性物流资源整合和物流泛在化战略，能给我国的经济插上更强有力的翅膀。
物流基础设施具有显著的混合产品特征。公共产品是指具有非排他性和非竞争性的社会产品。事实上，还有很多社会产品只是部分地具有非排他性和非竞争性。因为，很少有绝对的非排他性和非竞争性，大多数情况下，非排他性只是排他成本相对较高；而非竞争性只是边际成本变化相对较小。对于这些部分具有非排他性和非竞争性的社会产品，我们常称为混合产品。纯粹公共产品需要完全由政府投资，而混合产品则需要按照具体情况来解决投资政策问题。
物流线路方面基础设施的公共产品特征较为突出：全国性的干线物流线路基础设施包括公路建设方面，有“五纵七横”国道主干线投资、乡村“村村通”公路的通达度投资、全国铁路干线复线货运专线等投资、航空航海内河航行线投资等，因为它们的公共性都相当突出，在很多国家都是以政府投资为主的。
在我国的具体情况是：财政有一段时间建设任务过重。一些城际高速公路、铁路专线和管道运输，开始借助国企和其他一些经济组织的资金力量来建设。在北京有首创和首发两大集团，它们就投资并经营管理了多条高速公路。大秦铁路煤运专线虽然由国家投资，但改造投资则由相关上市公司来承担。这些由财政以外的力量承担的物流相关线路投资，仍然面临着一些公共性问题，在收费问题上容易形成矛盾，所以大多数国家都只授予这些线路有限时间的公司经营权。
