《有机农业产业化及其效益研究：以北京市为例/塞北经济文化论丛》：
如果只对生态系统能效中的一种能效进行研究，那么研究结果只代表生态系统能效中的一种能效特性，不能比较全面地反映整个生态系统能效的优劣程度，因此客观性比较差。奥多姆（H.T.Odum）在能值分析理论中将能值定义为：一种流动或贮存的能量中所包含的另一种类别能量的数量，称为该能量的能值。能值与能量不同，产品或劳务在形成过程中直接或间接投入应用的一种有效的能量就是该产品或劳务所具有的能值，其实质就是该产品或劳务所包含的能量。所以，能值可以被理解为存在于产品或劳务形成过程中直接或间接消耗的一些可以被体现出来的能量总和。在能量学中，人类所使用的各种能量都可以追溯到太阳能这一最原始的能源形势，奥多姆就利用能量的这一特性，在实际运用中以“太阳能值”来衡量某一能量的能值：任何流动或储存的能量所包含的太阳能之量，即为该能量的太阳能值。通过太阳能值的计算，人们可以衡量和比较不同类别、不同等级能量的真实价值，把能量流和物质流统一起来，真实、客观地反映系统的优劣。
在生态系统分析过程中，能值分析和能量分析是完全不同的两个概念，在生态系统中，其基本循环功能过程主要表现为能量的不断流动、转化和物质的不断循环。生态系统的能量分析目的是研究系统的能量流，并对其加以分析。在生态系统的能值分析过程中，将不在同一层次、不同种类以及无法相互比较的能量转化为同一层次的能值来比较研究，从而研究其在生态系统中所产生的作用。
