Author Description

伯特兰·罗素（Bertrand Russell，1872—1970），英国哲学家、数理逻辑学家、历史学家，1950年获诺贝尔文学奖。他与怀特海合著的《数学原理》对逻辑学、数学、集合论、语言学和分析哲学有着巨大影响。他的代表作品还包括《物的分析》《幸福之路》《西方哲学史》等。

《幸福之路》：
自我沉溺的表现形式有很多。我们可以将畏罪狂、自恋狂和自大狂看做是最为常见的三个类型。
提起“畏罪狂”，我指的并不是犯罪的人。可以说人人都犯了罪，也可以说没有人犯罪，这要看我们是如何定义罪行这个词了。我指的是沉溺于犯罪意识中的人，这种人永远都在自责。如果他信教的话，他就会说这是上帝在怪罪他。他认定自己应该是某种形象的人，这种形象与他认为的现实中的自己不断冲突着。如果他早就把坐在母亲腿上时学到的格言忘得一千二净了，那他的犯罪感就有可能深埋在他的潜意识中，而只有在他喝醉或睡着的时候这种感觉才会出现，可这已足以让任何事物失去它们的吸引力了。他心里依旧承认儿时被教导的所有禁忌：骂人是恶的；喝酒是恶的；做生意时表现出精明是恶的；最重要的是，性行为是恶的。当然了，他不会避开这些乐事，但他认为这些事毒害了他，因为他觉得这些事让他堕落。他整个身心所期盼的一种乐趣就是得到母亲的呵护，他记得他在儿时有过这样的经历。既然他再也没有这种乐趣了，便觉得一切都很乏味；既然他不得不犯罪，于是他决定痛痛快快地犯。当他坠人情网时，他会去寻找母性的温柔，可他并不能接受这样的温柔，因为他心中有他母亲的形象，所以他不会对任何一个与他发生过性关系的女人有丝毫的敬意。于是他对自己失望了，他变得残忍，而后又对其残忍进行悔过，接着重新开启一个先是幻想自己犯罪接着真实地悔过这一令人沮丧的过程。这就是很多表面上死硬的放荡者的真实心理。让他们误人歧途的是对无法企及的目标（母亲或母亲的替代者）的虔诚，以及早年被灌输的可笑的礼教习俗。对这些母性“美德”的牺牲者来说，走向快乐的第一步是从早年的信仰和情感中解放出来。
从某种意义上说，自恋就是习惯性犯罪感的反面，其特征是惯于自我欣赏并希望被别人赏识。一定程度的自恋肯定是正常的，不必对此表示遗憾，只有在表现得过分时，自恋才会变成一种很大的罪过。很多女人，特别是富裕阶层的女人，她们对爱情的感知能力已经完全消退了，所以才会用所有的男人都应该爱她们这样的强烈愿望来代替这种能力。而当这种女人确信有个男人已经爱上她时，她便不再需要他了。男人也是这样，只不过少一些罢了。一个经典的例子就是《危险关系》中的男主人公，这本著名小说描写了法国大革命快要发生时法国贵族们的爱情故事。当一个人的虚荣心到了这个地步时，除了自己之外，他是不会对其他任何人感兴趣的，因此也就不会从爱情中得到真正的满足，而他其他方面的兴趣消失得更快。
例如，大画家通常会被人崇拜，受此激励，自恋狂可能会去学习艺术。可是，由于绘画只是他达到目的的手段，所以他从不会对绘画技巧感兴趣，他眼中只有跟自己有关的事。这么做的结果只能是失败和失望，得到的是嘲笑，而不是他所期望的恭维。那些总是把自己勾勒成自己小说里的英雄人物的小说家们也是如此。工作上的所有真正的成功取决于你对与工作有关的事是否真的感兴趣。
成功的政治家们纷纷下台，原因就是他们逐渐地用自恋行为取代了对公众的关注和自己的施政方针。
只关心自己的人不是令人钦佩的人，人们也不会觉得他令人钦佩。因此，只是认为这个世界应该钦佩他，除此之外没有其他兴趣的人是不太可能达到他的目的的。即使达到了，他也不能完全快乐，因为完全地以自我为中心并不是人的天性。人为地限制自己的自恋狂刚好与被犯罪感控制了的畏罪狂一样。
