【第二章】当下，敬爱我们的父亲和母亲……
不死的爱
一位医生朋友曾跟我说：“在我的教学和医疗生涯中，我接触过许多感染了艾滋病毒的孩子。与这些特殊的孩子交往，教懂了我许多东西。而当中给我留下最深刻的印象，让我受益终生的，是一份蕴藏在一个小背包里的强大生命力和勇气。”
这是有关辛格的故事——
辛格的母亲，是艾滋病毒感染者，他在出生时，就已被感染。辛格弱小的生命，就这样在药物的维持下开始了。
在他五岁时，医生在他的胸腔大静脉内，安装了一条管子。这条管子与一个输液泵相连，输液泵就装在辛格背上的一个小背包里。药物就靠这个泵不断地通过管子输入辛格的血管。有时，他还需要吸氧气。
辛格却从不愿因此而放弃享受快乐童年的任何机会。
我常看到，他穿着一件红色外套，背着装满药品的背包，用一辆小四轮车拖着氧气瓶，在医院的后花园里玩耍、奔跑。
活着，让他由衷地快乐；活着，使他充满活力。这使所有认识辛格的人都感到吃惊。
辛格的妈妈常逗他说，因为他跑得太快，所以需要给他穿红色衣服。这样，当他在后花园玩耍时，她很快就可以透过窗户认出他。
可怕的病魔连辛格这样一个充满活力、精力充沛的孩子也不肯放过。辛格和他的母亲都病得非常严重。很显然，辛格已经没有生存的希望了，他母亲开始告诉他关于死亡的一些事情。她安慰辛格说自己也即将离去，他们不久就会在天堂里重逢。
在辛格弥留之际，他悄声说：“我就要死了，可我一点儿也不怕。我死时，请给我穿上红色的衣服。妈妈说她也要来天堂。当她来到时，我一定在玩着，我得确保她能很快地找到我。”
