对某些人来说，对自身成长的逃避，只树立低水平的抱负，怕做自己能做的事儿，自愿的自残，假装的愚蠢，骗人的谦卑，实际上是对自以为是，对有罪的傲慢和自大的防御。
我们害怕我们最高的可能性（正如害怕最低的可能性一样）。我们一般害怕变成我们在最完美的时刻、在最完善的条件下、以最大的勇气所能设想的样子。我们对于在这种高峰时刻看到自己如神一般的可能性感到愉快甚至激动。但我们同时又带着软弱、敬畏和恐惧的心情在这些可能性面前颤抖。
我们肯定爱慕那些体现了真、善、美、公正、完善，最终取得成功的人。但他们也使我们不安、焦虑、困惑，也许还有点妒忌和羡慕，有点自卑、自惭。他们往往使我们失去自信、自制和自重。这是因为：大人物仅仅由于他们的在场和他们的伟大就足以使我们意识到自己的渺小，不论他们是否有意要造成这样的影响。
发狂的幸福令人不能长久承受。我们的机体太弱，承受不了大剂量的伟大，正如机体太弱不能承受长时间的性高潮一样。
剧烈的情绪必然是极点的和暂时的，它必须让位给非极乐的宁静、较平和的幸福，对至善清晰而深沉的认知带来的内在喜悦。极点的情绪不能长久持续，但存在认知能长久持续。
假如我们要回答人类能长到多高，那么很明显，最好的办法是挑选出已经长得最高的人并研究他们。假如我们要知道人类能跑多快，那么，计算从人口中获得的一个“好样本”的平均速度是没有用的，更好的方法是搜集奥运会金牌获得者的资料，看他们能够达到的记录。假如我们想知道人类精神成长、价值成长或道德发展的可能性，那么，我仍坚持，研究那些最有德行、最懂伦理或最圣洁的人才能有最好的收获。
自我实现者无一例外都是献身于一项身外的事业，某种他们自身以外的东西。他们专心致志地从事某项工作，某项他们非常珍视的事业——按旧的说法或宗教的说法即天命或天职。他们从事命运以某种方式安排他们去做的事，他们做这件事也喜爱这件事，因此，工作与欢乐的分歧在他们身上已消失了。
个人趋向自我实现的八条途径：
第一，自我实现意味着充分地、活跃地、无我地体验生活，全神贯注，忘怀一切。它意味着一种不带有青春期自我意识的体验。在体验时，个体完完全全成为一个人。这就是自我实现的时刻。
