《心理大师手泽—心理学原理》是威廉·詹姆斯（William James 1842—1910）的代表之作。詹姆斯是美国心理学家，美国本土的第一位哲学家，美国机能主义心理学和实用主义哲学的先驱，美国心理学会的创始人之一。
《心理大师手泽—心理学原理》不仅是心理学之经典著作，同时也是美国机能主义心理学派兴起的标志。书中涉及的重要主题包括感觉、知觉、大脑功能、习惯、意识、自我、注意、记忆、思维、情绪等，这些主题对此后百余年的心理学研究起到了提纲挈领的作用。
《心理大师手泽—心理学原理》第一次提出了意识流理论。这一理论认为，意识不是静止的，而是因人、因时、因地在连续不断地流动的，詹姆斯将这种心理现象称为意识流（stream of consciousness）。他认为如果我们将流动的意识切断，对剖面进行分析，势必会扭曲意识的本质。意识流理论旨在反对当时非常流行的冯氏（冯特）心理学理论，即把心理现象分解为各种元素。詹姆斯的这一理论开启了批判心理学元素主义学说的先河。
书中还第一次提出了情绪理论。这一理论在詹姆斯学派的心理学体系中占有十分重要的地位。詹姆斯认为，在生理与情绪的相互影响中，生理变化在先，情绪体验在后。生理变化所引起的内部冲动传到大脑皮层，所引起的感觉冲动就是情绪。在这一理论中，情绪的形成被假定为内在的生理性神经过程，而非精神心理过程。这一理论同时被丹麦的生理学家朗格（Carl Lange 1834—1900）所发现，因此它被命名为詹姆斯－朗格情绪理论。
从上面提及的内容中可以看出，詹姆斯对心理学的贡献是多方面的。贡献之一是使现代心理学的体系更加完整。另外，詹姆斯关于心理学研究方法多元化的主张对当时的心理研究也起到了非常大的促进作用。在当时，结构主义的内省法比较盛行，詹姆斯并不反对这一研究方法，但他认为，内省法不足以真正了解个体适应环境的行为。因此，他主张心理学的研究要根据实际需要，适当采用观察法、实验法、比较法、调查法等多种研究方法。同时，他还主张，研究对象不应该限于正常的成年人，也应该扩大范围，把对儿童、心理异常者以及动物的研究纳入到心理学领域中来。
最重要的一点，詹姆斯重新阐述了“自我”的概念，奠定了现代心理学关于自我观念的基础。他指出，“自我”区分为“经验的我”和“认知的主体”，又称“自我”（Life 或 ego），“经验的我”包括所有一切个人和可以称为属于他的全部东西。詹姆斯认为，“自我”的客体由三部分组成：
1.物质：包括个体的身体、衣物、房屋、家庭、财产等；
2.社会：对个体本身的认可，例如名誉等，任何人都有多个“社会我”；
3.精神：包括个体的意识状态、特质、态度、气质等。
詹姆斯提倡的实用主义思想，对后世应用心理学的发展也产生了重大影响。他在1907年出版的《实用主义》一书中，首次提倡实用主义（pragmatism）。他认为，世上不存在绝对的真理，真理会随着时代环境的变迁而改变，适合于时代环境而有效用的东西，就是真理。
詹姆斯的另外一大贡献还体现在他的著作上。他的作品虽然不多，但是所有传世的作品都有着非常重要的意义。它们分别是《心理学原理》（1890）、《对教师讲心理学和对学生讲生活理想》（1899）、《实用主义》（1907）、《多元的宇宙》（1909）、《真理的意义》。
