意识的黎明
回到人类对观察的最初尝试并不难，看一看新生儿即可，看婴儿如何抓住他眼前的手指——同时也是抓住知识，你就看到了早期的观察者。这个婴儿正在逐步觉察他与外在世界之间的细微差别。
他一直在思考，这是一个无需语言的思考过程。爱因斯坦常说，他最好的主意常常是以画面——而不是以语言——的形式出现的。事实上，爱因斯坦四岁才开始说话。
或许，也存在着一个综合与分析的过程，这个婴儿可能也在将母亲发出的声音与他所观察到的事情联系在一起。无论如何，他肯定在辨别，此种辨别——分辨“外在”和“内在”——被称为“主客之分”。

做完这个“感知练习”后，你就意识到你所感知到的并不是你，我们可以将这一体验看做是意识或觉知从心智到身体各个部位的运动。
“辨别”肖然发生，它将你的“内在”与你的大拇指或脚跟区分开来。在能够进行真正的观察之前，对“内在”的体验是必不可少的，因为观察本身所针对的完全是“外在经验”。人们认为，大概三千多年——甚至更久之前，那时的人们尚无法清楚地辨明“外在”与“内在”或者说“我”的区别。或许他们只是隐约地知道自己有这种辨别的能力，不过他们没有“我”的意识。关于“我”的意识，朱利安·杰恩斯在他的著作《双相心智崩溃过程中意识的起源》中提出了令人深思的精彩论点。杰恩斯认为，大约三千年前，我们的祖先经历了第一次“精神崩溃”。他们开始觉知自我的存在，拥有主体意识，不再下意识地自动跟随他们脑中“神的声音”。杰恩斯相信，人类的两个半脑基本上是独立运作的，发生精神崩溃后，“神的声音”消失，人类开始觉知自己的存在，知道自己是一个独立的个体。透过这一相当粗暴猛烈的觉醒过程，人类获取了新的觉知：对其周遭环境的觉知。意识大崩溃——杰恩斯所提出的意识大崩溃——五百年后，古希腊文明诞生了。内在的“神的声音”不再控制人类意识，不过，可能依然有残留的嗡嗡声在希腊人脑中萦绕。他们开始热切地观察进入他们视线中的一切事物。然而，因为他们害怕“外在世界”，而且缺乏自信，他们依然是被动——不过却相当精确——的观察者。他们的第一个问题则是：“万物皆一？还是万物皆在改变？”

Introduction

1986年1月，大约200名量子物理学家聚集在纽约世贸中心，进行为期一周的研讨，讨论量子力学到底是什么奇怪的东西。这次会议（1986年在纽约市举办的关于“量子测量理论的新方法和新观点”的大会1在《量子心世界》首版发行六年后举行，我觉得以它来为《量子心世界》的增订版拉开序幕还是很合适的。
