Book Abstract

我将在下文中讨论有关应用心理技巧来解析梦的可能性，并由此显示所有梦均充满特别意义，而与梦者白天的精神活动有所联系。然后，我拟再就各梦所隐藏的奇异暧昧做一番演绎，以期由此看出梦的形成过程中所含之冲突或吻合之处。为了使梦的问题变得更容易了解，我对这方面的努力使我不得不对有关梦的各方说法作一通盘整理。
本书中我拟对早期以及当代有关梦的理论先作一概括的介绍，因为在以后的推论中，我将无法再有机会谈到这些。尽管梦的存在早已在几千年前即令人困惑，但科学方面的了解其实仍是非常有限。因此所有有关这方面的t／e述，从来就没有人能引用一家说法涵盖一切现象。读者也许都自己有过不少奇异的经验或有关此类的丰富材料，但真正有关梦的本质或其根本的解释方法，相信也仍付之阙如。当然，受一般教育而非梦分析专家对这方面的知识，那是更加贫乏了。
史前时期原始人类有关梦的观念，均深深影响他们对宇宙和灵魂的看法，而这些有兴趣的问题由于篇幅所限，我只好推荐有心之人详读拉巴克（Sir John Lubbock，2pLord Avebury），史宾塞（Herbert Spencer），泰勒（E.B.Tylor）及其他作者之名作。在我们未能完成释梦工作以前，我们永远无法真正了解他们对这问题所作的玄思及推测将有多重要的贡献。
这种原始时代所遗留下来对梦的看法迄今仍深深影响一般守旧者对梦的评价，他们深信梦与超自然的存在有密切的关系，一切梦均来自他们所信仰的鬼神所发的启示。也因此，它必对梦者有特别的作用，也就是说梦是在预、未来的。因此，梦内容的多彩多姿以及对梦者本身所遗留的特殊印象，使他们很难想像出一套有系统的观念，而需要以其个别的价值与可靠性作各种不同的分化与聚合。因此，古代哲学家们对梦的评价也就完全取决于其个人对一般人文看法的差异。
在亚里士多德（Aristotle（的两部作品内容中曾提及梦，当时他们已认为梦是心理的问题，它并非得自神谕，而是一种由于精力过剩（diamonic）而来的产物。他所谓的“精力过剩”，意指梦并非超自然的显灵，而仍是受制于人类精神力的法则，当然，这多少对某些人而言，也与神灵是有点关系的。梦是按梦者本身睡眠深度所产生的不同精神活动，亚里士多德曾提过一些梦中的特点；举例而言，他观察到梦能将
轻微的睡中知觉导出强烈的感官刺激（“一个睡觉中的人在他感到肉体上某部分较暖和时，他可能梦见自己走人火堆中”），由此他推论梦很容易告诉医师病人最先不易察觉的病兆。
由此，读者可以看出在亚里士多德以前的作者们并不以为梦是一种精神活动，而坚称神谕的存在。因此，自古以来这两种不同的说法就一直无法妥协，古人曾谋略将梦分成两类，一种是真正有价值的梦，它能带给梦者警告，或预卜，而另一种无价值、空洞的梦只是带来困惑或引入歧途。
第二章本书的开场白即已标明我在梦的观念上所受传统看法的影响。孙主要想让人们理解“梦是可以解释的”，而已经讨论过的那些对梦的解释所作的贡献，其实不过是我这份工作的附加物。在“梦是可以解释的”这一前提之下，我立即发现我完全不同于时下一般对梦的看法——因为要“解释梦”即是要给予梦有个“意义”，用某些具有确实性的，有价值的内容来作“梦”的解释。但就我所看得出的，梦的科学理论一点也帮不了梦的解释。因为，第一：根据这些理论，梦根本就不是一种心理活动，只是一种肉体的运作，透过符号以呈现于感官的成品。外行的意见一直是与此相反的。它们强调梦的运作是完全不合逻辑的。可是它们虽认为梦是不可理解的，是荒谬的，却又无法鼓足勇气地否认梦是有任何意义的。由本能的推断，我们可以说，梦一定有某种意义的，即使那是一种晦涩的“隐意”，用以取代某种思想的过程。因此我们只要能正确地找出此“取代物”（substitute），即可正确地找出梦的“隐意”。
