罗洛·梅（Rollo May），（1909－1994），美国存在心理学家和人本主义心理学家。1930年获得奥柏林学院文学学士学位，1938年获得纽约联合神学院神学学士学位，1949年获得哥伦比亚大学临床心理学博士学位。先后在怀特研究院和纽约社会研究新学院长期工作。获得过美国心理学会的临床心理学科学和职业杰出贡献奖和美国心理学基金会的心理学终身成就奖章等奖励。出版了《咨询的艺术》、《焦虑的意义》、《人的自我寻求》、《存在》、《爱与意志》、《权力与无知》、《创造的勇气》、《自由与命运》、《存在之发现》和《祈望神话》等20多部著作。

Introduction

我将爱与意志并列为本书书名会使一些读者感到惊讶，我始终认为爱与意志是相互依存不可分割的，二者是存在相互结合的过程——是走出去影响他人，影响他人的意识的形成与发展。但这只是精神意义方面的一种可能性。要实现这种可能性，还要求他同时敞开心扉，以其内心感受来自他人的影响，缺少爱的意志会被利用——第一次世界大战前，这样的例子俯拾皆是。而在我们这个时代，爱失去了意志，变得脆弱并变为实验性的。
我出于作者惯常的尊严与责任感而产生了写作该书的想法。在写作本书的八年中，许多朋友阅读并与我讨论了其中的章节。在此，我要对以下朋友表示感谢：杰罗姆·布鲁纳（Jerome Bruner）、桃瑞丝·克尔（Doris Cole）、罗伯特·李弗顿（Robert Lifton）、加德纳·墨菲（Gardner Murphy），而杰西卡·芮思（Jessica Ryan）给予我的不仅有对该书的直觉理解，还有实际的建议，对此，作为作者，除感激之外，更感到其必要性。
