Book Abstract

沟通是指人与人之间信息、情感、思想的传递。跨文化沟通与一般的沟通有所不同，其关键就是沟通的对象拥有不同的文化背景，这种不同文化背景的差异会导致沟通方式、过程、结果的差异。因此，误解、猜忌、迷惑甚至敌意等一系列问题在跨文化沟通过程中经常出现。一个成功的跨文化沟通者，不仅要对人与人之间的沟通拥有足够的知识和技巧，更重要的是要对不同文化背景下人的心理有全面的了解。
沟通有两种方式，即言语的沟通和非言语的沟通。在日常生活中，思想、情感和信息的沟通大多都是通过非言语的方式沟通。根据心理学家的研究，一个信息对信息接受者的影响，其中7％是由双方使用的词汇决定的；38％是由言语线索来决定的，包括说话的语调、音量、语速以及其他语言的相关特性；其他55％的作用来源于非言语的线索，包括面部表情、手势、身体的姿态等。可以这样说，决定沟通质量的因素不是由我们送出的信息决定，而是由我们输送的方式及在对方头脑里所产生的效果决定的。
中国传统文化中就有很多非言语沟通的例子，吴承恩在《西游记》中就把这种非言语沟通描绘得惟妙惟肖。其中有一段非常精彩：孙悟空在花果山生活多年之后，决定离开水帘洞去拜师学艺，于是他漂洋过海，遍访名山，最后终于寻到了灵台方寸山斜月三星洞的菩提祖师那里，并被祖师纳为徒弟。一日，菩提祖师登坛传道，悟空听到尽兴之处禁不住手舞足蹈，眉开眼笑。于是菩提便用戒尺打了悟空三下，然后撇下众门徒倒背着手独自从中门走了。聪明绝顶的孙悟空，很快便领悟到了菩提祖师的意思：师傅打他三下，是叫他三更前去；倒背着手走人中门将门关上，是叫他从后门进去，以便在密室单独传授他法术武艺。悟空自是万分欢喜，好不容易盼到三更时分，他蹑手蹑脚地来到师傅的榻前，求师傅传授他长生之妙道。菩提见悟空心灵佛道，便将种种法术一一传授。悟空认真倾听，勤奋操练，几年之后便学会了七十二变，成了神通广大的“齐天大圣”。
Introduction

每年，我都会把我在伯克利加州大学的美国研究生派到中国来，每次当他们在中国待了几个星期后回到美国时，他们都会很高兴的来找我，并且兴奋地告诉我，他们的确很惊诧，之前他们对中国有着太多的误解，他们说“我们所知道的很多关于中国的事情都是错误的”。
为什么他们对中国的印象和实际的经历会有如此大的差别呢？这是否是由他们的政治偏见所导致的呢？我们能否将这些差异完全归结于西方媒体对中国的妖魔化呢？事实永远比简单的推测复杂得多。我相信我的学生应该是比较具有独立思维和批判精神的，相对于一般美国民众来讲，他们对西方媒体是抱着怀疑态度的。事实上，他们应该是对中国相当友好的人士，要不然也不会跟随我这样一个美籍华人心理学家从事跨文化心理学研究。为了从事这方面的工作，我也经常鼓励和要求他们去搜寻和阅读反映中国社会、文化和历史变化的文献和文章。他们也经常从我所订阅的中国书刊及从中国大使馆所给予的材料中了解许多有关中国的现状。但是，这些宣传材料并没有发挥它们应该发挥的作用。我的这些学生甚至直截了当地对我说：“好像中国人不太关心或者是根本不知道如何与外国人进行交流与沟通。”
当然这一结论是不全面的，甚至有可能是错误的，中国政府和普通民众实际上非常关注外国人对中国的印象。为什么我们的努力和工作没有达到我们所期望的沟通效果？这就是这本书所要解决的问题。
毫无疑问，我们的宣传方式在过去的几十年里已经从极左式的、一厢情愿的灌输和傲慢的、仇视性的沟通方式，变成相对轻松、公平和理性的沟通方式。但是我们认为这样的沟通还存在很多问题，尤其是对外国人的文化心理和他们的沟通风格缺乏足够的了解。从中国社会发展的要求来看，我们跨文化沟通的能力。
