（二）研究对象的主体
即犯罪心理学研究哪些个体的犯罪心理。关于主体问题，有些学者认为，应把犯罪人的概念严格限定在刑法规定的犯罪主体的法定范围内，即犯罪人是一个法定概念。那么，刑法意义上的犯罪人，即刑事法律意义上的犯罪人就是犯罪主体，指具备刑事责任能力、实施了犯罪行为并且依法应当受到刑法惩罚的个体。由此，研究的主体范围就排除了：（1）因年龄、精神状况等因素而不具备刑事责任能力的个体；（2）实施了一般违法行为的个体；（3）正在接受劳动教养、接受矫正的个体。但是，事实上，在心理的发生机制上，上述三类主体是具有共同性的。而这三类主体的被排除，使得犯罪心理学的研究范畴受到相当大的限制，学科本身的局限性凸显。同时在另一个层面上，也就意味着犯罪心理学的理论研究将无法胜任其在犯罪预防、预测和矫正方面的重要使命，学科本身的立足基点也就没有了任何实际的意义，学科本身的存在价值丧失殆尽。
因此，犯罪心理学的主体范畴应包括：
1．犯罪人。是犯罪心理学的基本研究对象。其目的在于揭示犯罪者的人格特质，他们同一般人在心理机制和行为发生机制方面的差异。

心理科学是一门庞大的知识体系，包含数十个分支学科。如果采用两分法对心理科学分门别类，则可以将整个心理科学分为基础心理学和应用心理学。基础心理学担负着创造新的心理学知识的使命，包括发现新的心理学规律、探索新的方法和技术等。应用心理学则不同，它主要涉及对心理学理论、知识和技术的应用，即将基础心理学的研究成果应用到人类活动的各个领域，以便根据人心理活动的规律安排各种工作、学习和生活，从而最大程度地发挥人的功能作用，与此同时保证和提高人的生活质量和健康水平。目前，可以毫不夸张地说，应用心理学的影响已经遍及人类生活的各个领域。仅仅在高技术领域，心理学的理论、知识与方法便已经成为人工智能、模式识别和虚拟现实等的重要基础。在我国，心理学理论和知识已经被广泛应用到教育、医学、工商业、军事、司法和航空航天等领域，并正在发挥其独特的作用。
