心理上的痛苦是如何产生的？有心理问题的人到底怎么了？这些都是研究心理健康和心理疾患的社会学家们所要解答的基本问题。为了解答第一个问题，社会学家们需要考察社会系统的组织方式以及人们的幸福感；而回答第二个问题，则要考察一些人如何被贴上有心理疾患标签的、别人对这种标签做何反应以及社会如何对患有心理疾患的人实施治疗等。
过去三十多年中社会学家们为了回答上述问题已做了相当多的研究工作。本书引用这些研究成果系统描述该领域的研究现状。处理该类问题的社会学方法不同于生物学和心理学方法，它将发挥特别重要的作用。

心理上的痛苦是如何产生的？在当今美国社会，解释心理疾患的成因通常要对个体的生理和心理现象进行调查。我们试图通过着重研究患者内在生活的特点来解释他在心理上发生疾患的原因。他有心理疾患的家族史吗？他们在孩童时代是怎样的？
