二、中学生理想的特点
在不同时期，我国研究者对当时中学生的理想状况进行了调查。
20世纪80年代，国内学者对中学生的理想研究较多。例如，根据当时的调查，中学生中对理想的认识肤浅、模糊，没有明确目标的（即属于前述的第一种理想类型）人次占14.9％；认为理想就是职业的（即属于第三种理想类型）人次占15.4％；具有远大理想的（即属于第四种理想类型）人次占41.9％；受教师、家长或英雄人物的影响，表现出对未来的向往的（即属于第二种理想类型）人次占27.8％。第二种和第四种理想类型的中学生占调查人数的69.7％，这反映了当时的中学生的理想特点，说明当时中学生的思想认识主流是好的。北京地区调查协作组.中学生理想、动机和兴趣的调查［J］.北京师范大学学报：社会科学版，1982（1）.
21世纪初，研究者调查了当时中学生的理想状况，并跟20世纪80年代中学生的理想状况进行了比较，结果显示：
（1）在远大理想一项上，当代中学生比20世纪80年代下降了近40个百分点；而认为“理想就是职业”的学生却比80年代剧增了近75个百分点，“没有理想或理想不确定”的人数明显少于80年代。
（2）当代中学生愿意当工人的比例大幅度下降，愿意当农民的为零；愿意从事军、公、司职业的百分比达到17.46％，比20世纪80年代上升了近14个百分点；愿意从事企业管理、科技、文艺、医务、教育方面工作的学生百分比，均呈现上升趋势；不同年代愿意从事科技、体育工作的学生人数百分比比较接近。所敬佩的人物中，政治家仍然居多，但比例有所下降；敬佩文学家的比例有所上升；但敬佩中外科学家的人数下降40多个百分点。对中学生所敬佩的133个理想人物进行排序，排在前5位的分别是周恩来（17.81％）、比尔盖茨（6.7％）、毛泽东（4.9％）、鲁迅（4.25％）、邓小平（3.27％）。
（3）在价值观方面，当代中学生赞成“人生的价值在于奉献而不在于索取”观念的比例为44.7％；而20世纪 80年代的比例为13.8％，对于“人不为己，天诛地灭”的观念，有超过半数的学生表示反对。
（4）在幸福观方面，调查显示，有21.95％的中学生将自身的发展作为人生的最大幸福，其次为家庭幸福、有知心朋友和良好的同学关系；相应地，中学生将自身才能不足或才能得不到发展作为自己最大的烦恼。
2009年的一项研究调查了全国3636名青少年（12―19岁）的理想状况于欧.当代青少年理想状况分析及其引导［J］.学校党建与思想教育，2009（5）.，结果显示：
（1）人生目标状况方面：在调查的群体中，70％以上的青少年有“基本明确”或“非常明确”的人生目标。在“希望成为什么样的人”的回答中，有33.8％的青少年希望“能在个人事业上有所成就，自我实现”；26.4％的青少年希望“为国家和人民做出贡献，对社会有用”；而选择“有钱”、“有权势、有地位”的青少年分别为4.3％和2.7％。
（2）职业理想状况方面：从调查看，“科研机构研究人员、教师”是青少年最为青睐的职业；其次为企事业管理人员；希望成为自由职业者、医生、技术人员的青少年也比较多，而希望成为公务员、个体私营业主的略少；愿意当工人、农民的青少年更是寥寥无几，均不足1％。
（3）道德理想状况方面：在处理公私关系问题上，多数青少年认为自己能“公私兼顾”，具体来说，有33.7％的青少年赞同应把“大公无私，公而忘私”作为追求目标，32％认为应追求“公私兼顾”，26.9％认为应追求“先公后私，先人后己”，而认为应追求“先私后公”和“损公肥私”的人数比例均低于3％。此外，在对“某银行女职员为保护国家钱财，与持刀歹徒英勇搏斗而致残”这一行为的评价中，认为“很可贵，我也会这么做”的青少年占18.9％，认为“很钦佩，但我不能肯定自己能做到”的占57.3％，认为“很高尚，但我不愿这么做”的占14.4％，有8.1％的青少年认为“太不值得”。
（4）政治理想状况方面：参与调查的青少年中，在入党态度上，愿意申请入党的占79％，表明不少人有一定的政治抱负，希望通过入党参与政治活动。而青少年在申请入党的原因上表现出一定的多样性，例如，“因信仰共产主义而入党”的占13％，“为他人和社会多做贡献”的占30％，“更好地发挥自己的社会作用并早日成才”的占30.7％。此外，大约有70％的青少年对我国社会保持长期稳定具有信心，对我国当前的经济政策表示认可，反映出大多数青少年对建设中国特色社会主义理想的认同与信心。
从这一项调查可以看出，当前我国青少年的理想状况表现出了一些新的特点：
（1）追求个人发展与社会需要之间的平衡和统一，但更强调自我价值的实现。
（2）务实性、功利性成分增加。当代青少年更加注重理想是否有实现的可能，更多地将个人的理想与个人的发展方向或职业联系在一起，在确立个人理想时更多地顾及现实因素。
（3）人生目标比较明确，但缺乏将远大目标转化为现实的意志。因此，在遭遇挫折的时候往往容易放弃原先的目标。
（4）时尚元素和传统因素并存。既有希望从事游戏设计师之类时尚职业的理想，也有将“拥有美满和谐的家庭”视为“人生最大的幸福”之类的传统观念。
（5）自主愿望强烈，但也遵从社会的主导价值取向。一方面，随着独立意识和自主意识的高涨，青少年的理想中表现出对自由和无拘无束的向往；另一方面，他们也渴望与外界交往、投身社会活动，遵从社会的主导价值取向。
