此书的布局
书中呈现的每一种技巧，我们都把它归类到了联系最紧密的疗法中（个体疗法、家庭疗法、团体疗法、认知一行为疗法等等），并为其归纳出一个简短的定义和关于如何具体运用的说明，最后还为每个技巧列举出相关的例子。
这些例子来源于我们平日心理咨询和咨询类教育的工作经历，也来源于我们的观察、督导及与其他治疗师的探讨商议（加起来有50多年的时间）。
毫无疑问，技巧运用的方式是多种多样的。书中列举的这些例子是以作者的视角写下的，尽管作者在不同的例子中想方设法地用不同的“治疗师口吻”。我们应该清楚地认识到，每个不同的治疗师都可以找到属于他自己的方式来将治疗技术与他自己的哲学观融合起来。
例如，有的治疗师会用直接的、直击要害的方式询问来访者的相关信息，而有的治疗师会对来访者的讲述去伪存真，而后得到同样的信息。
各章中的技巧是按从心理治疗书籍（过去和现在的）中搜集时的自然组合安排的。此书涉及个体疗法、团体疗法、游戏疗法、家庭疗法，并尽可能多地容纳各种不同的技巧。我们还特意参考了不同的理论。
章与章之间并没有清晰的界线。实际上，有些技巧也可以或者本来就已经被划分到几个不同的章节里。此外，当你在阅读每个技巧的定义时，你可能会发现其中的一些词语和短语也可以用于其他技巧的定义。例如，下文中的治疗师的回应方式既可看作释义，又可看作情感反映。

当然，真正要辨别这个治疗师的回应是情感反映还是释义，就要听听治疗师语调的变化了。如果将重音放在“糟糕”二字上，可以断定为她想表达对来访者情感的关注和理解。而如果治疗师的语调没有发生明显的变化，可能意味着它只是一种“释义”。
现在，让我们慢慢来着重强调一下这一点，因为治疗师自身的一些因素，例如，语气的轻重、语调、语速、沉默的运用、谈话中7，断以及其他一些非言语行为，的确会对治疗师信息的传达产生重大的影响。再举个例子，这次治疗师只作出一个词语的回应，但可能符合本书中几种不同技巧的使用标准。
来访者：我现在真的感到很孤独。
治疗师：孤独？
“孤独”一词，对于来访者来说可能有很多种含义，其中的每种含义都取决于治疗师的回应方式（语气、语调及相应的影响）和来访者的理解。如果治疗师的语调在单词发音的尾部发生变化，“孤独”一词可能听起来就像一个间接的开放式问题；如果治疗师言语中不带任何感情色彩和语调的变化，它可能是释义；如果治疗师表现出了情感色彩并引导来访者相信他懂得“孤独”是一种什么样的感觉，则它既可以是共情又可以是情感反映；再如，若治疗师同时运用一种对抗性的非言语反应，那它将可能被理解为一个间接的对质。

我们为各种机构或项目（中小学、学院、大学、康复所、差生项目等）中有心理治疗需要的人们提供治疗，为研究生院中满怀抱负的治疗师授教，一路走来，已有50多年的历程。在这其中我们求助过许多专家学者，参加过大量技能提升的研讨会。这些经历，以及初学者们时而提出的类似“您能为我举例说明一下吗”的基础性问题，促使我们写下这本书。
尽管这些年出现了许多有关心理治疗临床技术的书，但我们仍觉得这里有一个巨大的缺憾。因为没有一本书对治疗中运用的大量基础性和拔高性技巧进行分门别类、加以描述并提供案例说明。我们正是打算用此书去填补这个缺憾。
当然，单凭技巧和技术并不能造就一名成功的心理治疗师或一次有效的治疗。正如我们其中一个督导弗兰克。梅恩（Frank Main）博士（南达科他大学心理咨询系教授）常说的那样：“真正的治疗师，绝不仅仅只是技巧纯熟的人。”我们非常赞同弗兰克的观点。
