《心理学的故事（精编普及版）》：
公元前7世纪后半叶，埃及受制于国王普萨美提克一世。在其漫长的统治时期，普萨美提克建立的卓越功勋数不胜数，其中包括将亚述人驱逐出境，使埃及的艺术和建筑发扬光大，为社会积累了令人炫目的巨额财富，等等。更有趣的是，他还别出心裁地构想并指导了人类历史上的第一次心理测试。
很久以来，埃及人自认为是这个世界上最古老的民族。普萨美提克出于好奇，决定探索并证明这一观念。像其他优秀的心理学家一样，他的实验起始于一个假设：如果孩子在出生之后即被剥夺学习语言的机会，那么，他们就会本能地说出某种最原始的语言——人类与生俱来、浑然天成的语言。普萨美提克认为，这个语言应当是最古老民族的自然语言，而他想证明的是，这个最古老的民族是埃及人。
为证实这种假设，普萨美提克征召了两个出生于社会下层的婴儿，然后把他们交给一个边远地区的牧人抚养。两个孩子被安置在相互隔离的小屋里，得到舒适的食宿与照料，但不让他们听到任何言语。
希腊历史学家希罗多德追溯了这个故事的真正起源。故事出于麦菲斯的赫菲斯托斯教堂牧师之口，那牧师说，普萨美提克的目的只有一个，就是倾听两个婴儿在咿呀学语时所发出的第一个音符是什么。
实验成功了。在孩子两岁时的某天，当牧人打开房门时，孩子们跑向他，不停地重复一个单词：“贝克斯”。对于牧人来说，这个词没有任何意义，因而没有在意。然而，由于两个孩子此后经常叫喊“贝克斯”，他就将此报告给普萨美提克。普萨美提克传令把孩子们带来，亲耳听到他们口中说出的“贝克斯”。他不知所云，让人四处探访，从弗里吉亚人那儿得知“贝克斯”是他们的语言，意思是“面包”。
这个结局让普萨美提克颇觉失望，因为它无疑是在告诉他：比埃及更古老的民族是弗里吉亚。
今天的我们倒是可以聊以自慰了。通过对隔离条件下所抚养大的孩子的研究，我们已经得知：世界上绝对没有天然语言，一个从未听过别人说话的孩子是不可能说话的。普萨美提克受束于一个假设，又想当然地把一个咿呀之音认定为真正的单词。
虽然如此，我们仍要敬佩他，因为他的所有努力皆为证明一个假设，而且，这一实验基于这样一个观念：大脑通过内在进程形成思想的概念，可以通过实证取得。
