一、神奇的冬虫夏草
清代的蒲松龄曾写道：“冬虫夏草名符实，变化生成一气通。一物竞能兼动植，世界物理信无穷。”从外形看，冬虫夏草露出地面的部分像草，埋于地下的部分像虫。“草”生虫头上，“虫”似草的根。有人说它是草，有人说它是虫，还有人说它“既是虫又是草”。到底哪一种说法正确呢？
按现代生物学讲，它头上长的“草”，是靠孢子繁殖后代的麦角菌科真菌冬虫夏草菌株的地上部分，并非高等植物的地上部分；地下生的“根”，是蝙蝠蛾科昆虫幼虫的尸体，既非植物的木质根，也非昆虫幼虫的活体。前者是真菌的子座，它具有鲜活的生命力，正在生长发育，为繁殖下一代做准备；后者为昆虫类寄主动物幼虫的尸体，在此阶段它不具丝毫的生命力，只是为前者提供生存场所和生长必需的营养物质。因此，生物学家根据生物物种的分类原则和其本身的形态特性，把它确定为麦角菌科真菌冬虫夏草寄生在蝙蝠蛾科昆虫幼虫上的子座及幼虫尸体的复合体。虽然它是真菌与昆虫尸体的复合物，但昆虫的尸体早已失去了生命的活力，而子座却正处于生命旺盛阶段。依据自然属性分类法，应归属于菌类中药药材。
