在理论基础上，没有习惯性地采取将特殊儿童首先定位在“特殊样态”，而后以某个常模为标准，选用各种办法对他们实施干预；取而代之的是把特殊儿童自身的实际情况理解为个体生命在其发展过程中的一种多样性表达，教育者所要做的工作是要在接受他们特有表达的基础上，给他们提供最适于他们的发展性支持。在我看来，这不仅仅是对特殊教育理论基础的更新，更是对特殊儿童乃至对人类生命的落到实处的尊重。
在具体章节编排上，《特殊儿童教育与康复文库：特殊儿童早期发展支持》没有采纳先前多数同类书的常用方式，依据特殊儿童的类别（比如视觉、听觉、言语语言等各种障碍）探讨如何对他们进行支持（或干预）的做法，而是从建构人际生态支持系统的视角出发，逐一探讨特殊教育工作者的工作路径与操作方式。具体做法为：以特殊儿童整体为对象，遵循他们在现实生活中的成长脉络，以他们的每一步成长引领我们去确定我们需要提供支持的坐标与内容。涉及对特殊儿童自身各种能力发展的支持、对与特殊儿童发生密切关联的人员（家长、教师、社工等）的支持、对特殊儿童日常生活与专门学习的环境（家庭、教育机构、社区等）的支持，每一类支持又都被划分为许多细小的分支比如家长与教师的素养、各种微观课程与宏观的政策或策略等等。这种做法的唯一目的是想让《特殊儿童教育与康复文库：特殊儿童早期发展支持》能够真正有用、实用。

《特殊儿童教育与康复文库：特殊儿童早期发展支持》：
2.家庭是儿童发展的重要场所
家庭作为社会中的一个基本单位，为了满足个体和社会的需求，具有许多特有的以及一般性的职能，如生育职能、生产消费的经济职能、教育职能、抚养和赡养职能、休息娱乐职能等。但在众多职能中，家庭的教育职能是其最基本的职能之一，因为“它不仅要完成着人口的自然再生产，而且要承担人口的社会再生产”①。家庭教育一般是在家庭生活中，由家长对其子女和其他年幼者实施的教育和影响。②家庭，是将一个“生物人”培养成为一个“社会人”的首要场所，是影响儿童社会化的主要因素之一。随着社会的变迁，各种社会性的教育机构包括幼儿园、学校、培训机构等的出现为家庭分担了部分教育的重任，但是作为个体出生和成长的第一场所，社会教育机构无法替代家庭对儿童的教育和影响。
（二）家庭对儿童发展具有重要影响
家庭是儿童成长的首要场所，担负着为儿童提供成长所需的物质条件、帮助儿童从“生物人”成长为“社会人”的重任。
1.家庭为儿童发展提供基本的物质供给
家庭是儿童出生和成长的地方。从儿童出生，父母就承担起教育儿童的责任。教育包含着“教”和“养育”两层含义。为儿童的生长提供基本的物质条件是养育儿童最重要的任务，也是教育的前提，儿童的身体健康发展是全面发展的基本条件，取决于家庭所提供的基本生活物质资料。另外，家庭所提供的利于儿童发展的学习资源，譬如书籍、玩具、学习工具等都能够为儿童创造良好的学习发展环境。因为家庭经济收入水平不同，儿童在家庭中所获得的物质供给有显著差异，收入水平较高的家庭，能够为儿童发展提供更多的物质保障与教育资源，经济水平低的家庭，儿童可获得的生活条件与教育资源会相对受限。
2.家庭是儿童社会化的场所
个体的社会化是指“个人学习知识、技能和规范，取得社会生活资格，发展自己的社会性的过程”。儿童刚出生时是一个“生物人”，而家庭的教育职能主要体现在培养适应社会生活的“社会人”，因此家庭成为儿童社会化的首要场所。儿童要想成为一个合格的社会成员，就必须学习如何与人交往、习得并遵守社会行为规范。儿童在社会化过程中，最初接触的群体是家庭成员，父母、兄弟姐妹及其他亲戚。父母是儿童最亲近的人，儿童由最初与父母的交往开始，推及到身边其他的人。儿童早期对父母的依恋，尤其是对母亲的依恋使儿童获得了最初的信任感和安全感，同时也影响着儿童与其他人的交往以及社会化进程。而如果儿童在早期的社会化过程中没有一个安全稳定的家庭氛围，势必会对儿童的发展造成消极影响。
3.良好的家庭环境是儿童和谐发展的保障
父母对儿童的教育总是在一定的家庭环境中进行，儿童的健康成长需要和谐的家庭环境做保障。在我国古代，人们已经意识到环境对个体发展的影响，譬如“孟母三迁”“近朱者赤，近墨者黑”等典故皆说明了环境对儿童发展的重要意义。家庭环境是儿童接触最早、生活时间最长的环境，因此家庭环境的好坏直接、深刻地影响着儿童的身心健康发展。家庭环境包括家庭的物质环境和人际环境。所谓物质环境是指受家长收入、职业、受教育程度等因素直接影响而形成的一种物质生活环境，譬如家庭的居住条件、家居物品的安排等。家庭的人际环境是指家庭成员之间通过互动形成的一种人际关系状态。在物质环境相对稳定的前提下，家庭的人际环境对儿童发展影响尤为突出。直接决定家庭人际环境的因素有家长的性格特点、家长的儿童观和教育观、儿童的个性特点等，其中家长的儿童观最为关键。家庭良好的人际环境可以通过亲子双方共同努力来改善。民主平等和谐的家庭人际环境更加有利于幼儿形成乐观、善良、开朗等积极的个性特点，相反，专制紧张独裁的家庭人际环境则使得幼儿形成自卑、敏感、悲观等消极的个性特点。因此，父母和幼儿共同努力创建良好的家庭环境将更有助于儿童的和谐发展。
