从左侧《庄子》中可以得知，孔子说“我一直没有生病就是因为自己经常艾灸”。因为艾灸能够祛病缓疾、延年益寿，所以孔子长寿功劳肯定缺不了艾灸的调养。
中国人用艾灸治病，在春秋战国时期就已经发展得相当全面了。比如在《孟子·离娄》就有关于艾灸的记载，“今之欲王者，犹七年之病，求三年之艾也”。这句话是拿艾灸做了一个比喻。古久指出疾病缠身七年依然可以通过艾灸治疗，并且恢复健康，由此艾灸的神奇之处可见一斑。医圣孙思邈灸足三里活百岁据史料记载，我国历史上有“医圣”之称的孙思邈，幼时体弱多病，中年时喜欢上了艾灸，据其自己述说常常“艾火遍身烧”，且尤其爱灸足三里穴。孙思邈即便到了90多岁高龄，仍能“视听不衰，神采甚茂”，甚至在年过百岁之时，还能精力充沛地著书立说。正是因为艾灸的这种神奇功效，令他痴迷不已，在其所著的《千金方》、《千金翼方》两书中，记载了大量有关艾灸的内容，并在前人的基础上有所创新和发展。例如，在灸法上他就增加了许多种隔物灸的治疗方法，如隔豆豉饼灸、隔泥饼灸、隔附片灸、隔商陆饼灸等。
犬宋皇帝是灸疗的忠实粉丝
在清朝以前，上至皇家宫廷、下到普通百姓，都十分喜好艾灸，几乎人人都认可这种既能防病治病、又可养生保健的医疗方法。据《宋史》记载：太祖赵匡胤的弟弟赵光义生病了，赵匡胤急忙前去探望，并亲自手持艾条替弟弟灸疗，赵光义体有寒湿，温热的气息通过艾灸送入体内，寒热交织产生疼痛。见弟弟饱受疼痛之苦，赵匡胤心有不忍，于是也给自己艾灸，分担弟弟的疼痛。古人赞赏赵匡胤对弟弟的深情厚谊，于是用成语“灼艾分痛”来颂扬他的美德，赞赏兄弟之间的情分。
从这段记载可以得知，艾灸疗法不仅仅在民间盛行，甚至连皇帝都是艾灸的粉丝。赵匡胤亲自为弟弟艾灸、也取艾自灸，可见其对艾灸操作熟练，并且相当信任。
北宋大文豪欧阳修传世墨宝不多，但是在北京故宫博物院却收藏着一份“灼艾帖”，其内容是说欧阳修的长子欧阳发曾经接受过艾灸的治疗，欧阳修认为艾灸是一门学问，值得探讨与研究。南宋著名的画家李唐，擅长山水和人物画，在他流传下来的为数不多的作品中就有一幅《灸艾图》，图中描绘的是一位村医坐在小板凳上，正在为病人灸灼背部。此图是我国古代以医事为题材的绘画之一，现存于中国台湾省的台北故宫博物院。
