光與影，是一切美術的前提，在技法運用與情感表現上一直是西方美術探討的重點。西方繪畫重視明暗法，從最初畫家只在作品中加入最小限度的陰影，用以捕捉物體的明暗，到十七世紀義大利畫家卡拉瓦喬的出現，開創出暗底光影的強烈對比色調畫法，徹底改變了整個歐洲的繪畫風格。他大膽運用明與暗的對立布局，刻劃在信仰與罪惡兩端擺盪的人心，創造令人震撼的感官情緒與戲劇張力。西洋史上極少有畫家具有卡拉瓦喬般深遠的影響力，他的影響遍及義大利、西班牙、法國、荷蘭。

起自卡拉瓦喬黑暗藝術的水脈，
深刻影響了拉圖爾、林布蘭、維梅爾的藝術創作
後繼者紛紛在卡拉瓦喬明暗法基礎上開創屬於自己的繪畫風格：林布蘭筆下的光不再銳利誇張，試圖從內部暈染開來表現出精神上的深度；維梅爾的作品漸漸用光來驅逐黑暗，成為攝影藝術的先驅。一直到十九世紀後半，色彩華麗明亮的印象派興起，終於將黑暗從畫布驅逐出去，西洋美術史也就此進入另一個繽紛多彩的新紀元。
