从前有一天晚上两个穷樵夫正穿过一个大松林走回家去。这是冬天,又是一个非常寒冷的夜晚。地上雪铺得很厚,树枝上也是一样地积了雪。他们走过的时候,两旁的小树枝接连地被霜折断;他们走到瀑布跟前,她也静静地悬在空中,因为她已经被冰王吻过了。
这个夜晚真冷得厉害,连鸟兽也不知道该怎样保护自己。
狼夹着尾巴从矮林中一颠一跛地走出来,嗥道:"唔!真是很怪的天气。为什么政府不想个办法?"
"啾!啾!啾!"绿梅花雀叫道,"衰老的大地死了,人们用白寿衣把她收殓了。"
''大地要出嫁了,这是她的结婚礼服,"斑鸠在悄悄地说。他们的小红脚冻伤得厉害,可是他们觉得对这个情景应当取一种带浪漫性的看法。

天气的确太冷。住在高高的杉树上的小松鼠们接连擦着彼此的,'子取暖,兔子们在他们洞里缩着身子,不敢朝I'1~I、看一眼!惟一似乎喜欢这种天气的就是大角鸱。他们的羽毛让白霜冻得很硬,可是他们并不介意,他们骨碌碌地转动他们又黄又大的眼睛,隔着树互相呼唤着:"吐毁特!吐伙!吐毁特!吐伙!天气多好啊!"
两个樵夫只顾向前走着,一路上起劲地向他们的手指头吹气,用他们笨重的有铁钉的靴子在雪块上乱踏。有一回他们陷进一个雪坑里去,爬起来的时候,他们一身白得就像正在磨面的磨面师;又有一回他们在坚硬光滑的冰(沼地上的水冻成了冰)上失了脚,他们的柴捆跌散了,他们不得不拾起来绑在一块儿;还有一回他们觉得已经迷了路,害怕得不得了,因为他们知道雪对待那些睡在她怀里的人素来是很残忍的。不过他们信任那位守护着一切出门人的好圣马丁①,便顺着原路退回去;他们小心地下着脚步,后来终于走到了树林口,看见下面山谷里远远地闪着他们村子的灯光。
他们看见自己出了险,高兴得不得了,便大声笑起来,在他们眼里大地仿佛是一朵银花,月亮就像一朵金花。
然而他们笑过以后,就忧愁起来了,他们想起了自己的贫穷,一个樵夫便对他的伙伴说:''我们为什么还要高兴呢,既然生活偏向有钱人,不是向着像我们这样的穷人?我们还不如冻死在林子里,或者让野兽抓住我们来弄死。"

王尔德于一八五四年生于爱尔兰的首府都柏林。王尔德这名字挺中国化的，其实他有一个连西方人都少有的大长名字：奥斯卡-芬格尔·奥弗拉赫蒂·威利斯·王尔德！
王尔德的父亲名叫威廉-王尔德，是一位十分著名的外科医生；他母亲是作家，又是有名的文学女主持人，经常主持伦敦诗歌戏剧沙龙，曾使用“斯珀兰扎”的笔名发表过许多文学作品。王尔德早年在都柏林三一学院研习古典名著，而后到牛津马格达兰学院就读，因成绩优秀显露头角，成为有名的学生，并因他的诗《拉凡纳》获得纽迪盖特奖。在牛津求学期间，他穿着花里胡哨，极力张扬唯美主义，即“为艺术而艺术”，而成为公众瞩目的人物，但不少守旧人士对他的做派和主张l不有成见。敏感的王尔德针对此世俗之见曾戏言说：“我王尔德要么臭名昭著，要么名扬天下。”
王尔德天分极高，谈吐机智幽默，话锋不逊，写作标新立异，很快走运伦敦及英国文坛，成为文学名流。一八八一年，他出版他的第一部集子《诗集》，广受欢迎，并由此导致他首次赴美巡回讲学一年。初登美洲大陆，带着英国人的傲慢和他特有的表现方式，他在纽约海关登记处留下了那句极具个性的名言：“我需要申报的只有我的天才”(Ihave nothing to declare but my genius)。一八八四年他和康斯坦丝-洛伊德喜结良缘。婚后生有二子。正是由于对儿子的爱，王尔德曾致力于儿童文学创作，其中主要是童话故事。
进入十九世纪九十年代，王尔德迎来了他的创作高峰。先是他的唯…部长篇小说((道连·格雷的画像》于一八九一年发表，接着他走红伦敦舞台：《温德米尔夫人的扇子》(1892)、《一个无关紧要的女人》(1893)、《理想丈夫》(1895)、《认真的重要》(1895)，以及他的最后一部用法语写的象征主义悲剧((莎乐美》(1895)。《认真的重要》被认为是其戏剧创作上的代表作。
至此，王尔德一直是生活的宠儿，一路顺风，几乎每涉及一个文学领域、每刨作一部作品，都会取得极大成功，赢得一片喝彩，真可谓“名扬天下”了。
如同在不同文学体裁的作品里所反映的，王尔德赞美友谊，珍视友谊，与他喜爱和敬重的人建立友谊。在他的种种友谊中，有一例称得上是“友谊中的友谊”，那便是他和他的亲密朋友艾尔弗雷德·道格拉斯勋爵的友谊。应该指出的是，他们的这种友谊包含着王尔德对男性美的一种追求。他们两个都算得上年轻貌美，彼此吸引，双双出入伦敦上流社会以及剧院、饭店、餐馆和咖啡厅这些公共场合，构成了伦敦社会的一道风景。然而，这道风景在伦敦上流社会并不受欢迎，认为它伤风败俗之举的大有人在，其中道格拉斯的父亲昆斯伯里侯爵就是深恶痛绝者之一。这位侯爵的深恶痛绝本源自他和儿子的矛盾，当然也包括反对儿子和王尔德的交往。这导致了一场官司，而且，在法庭取证时小道格拉斯倒向亲情一边，王尔德终因同性恋之罪被判刑两年。这场官司致使他家破财散，两年的监狱苦役和精神折磨摧毁了他的身体，此时的王尔德从天堂掉人地狱，又可谓“臭名昭著”了。
