Author Description

刘鹗，字铁云，别署洪都百炼生。江苏丹徒（今镇江市）人。生于一八五0年，卒于一九一0年。他对数学、医学水利等，皆有研究。曾在河南、山东巡抚处充任幕僚，因治河有功，升任知府，后弃官经商。八国联军入侵北京时，用低价从联军处购得太他储粟，售珪饥民。后以私售太仓粟罪戌新疆，病死于迪化（今乌鲁木齐）。著有《老残游记》《勾股天元草》《历代黄河变迁图考》《铁云藏龟》《铁云诗存》等。

那日，又在北柱楼吃饭，是个候补道请的。席上右边上首一个人说道：“玉佐臣要补曹州府了。”左边下首，紧靠老残的一个人道：“他的班次很远，怎样会补缺呢？”右边人道：“因为他办强盗办的好，不到一年竞有路不拾遗的景象，宫保赏识非凡。”前日有人对宫保说：“曾走曹州府某乡庄过，亲眼见有个蓝布包袱弃在路旁，无人敢拾。”某就问土人：“这包袱是谁的？为何没人收起？”土人道：“昨儿夜里，不知何人放在这里的。”某问：“你们为什么不拾了回去？”都笑着摇摇头道：“俺还要一家子性命吗！”如此，可见路不拾遗，古人竞不是欺人，今日也竞做得到的！’宫保听着很是喜欢，所以打算专折明保他。”左边的人道：“佐臣人是能干的，只嫌太残忍些。未到一年，站笼④站死两千多人，难道没有冤枉吗？”旁边一人道：“冤枉一定是有的，自无庸议，但不知有几成不冤枉的？”右边人道：“大凡酷吏的政治，外面都是好看的。诸君记得当年常剥皮做兖州府的时候，何尝不是这样？总做的人人侧目而视就完了。”又一人道：“佐臣酷虐，是诚然酷虐，然曹州府的民情也实在可恨。那年，兄弟署曹州的时候，几乎无一天无盗案。养了二百名小队子，像那不捕鼠的猫一样，毫无用处。及至各县捕快捉来的强盗，不是老实乡民，就是被强盗胁了去看守骡马的人。至于真强盗，一百个里也没有几个。现在被这玉佐臣雷厉风行的一办，盗案竟自没有了。相形之下，兄弟实在惭愧得很。”左边人道：“依兄弟愚见，还是不多杀人的为是。此人名震一时，恐将来果报也在不可思议之列。”说完，大家都道：“酒也够了，赐饭罢。”饭后各散。
过了一日，老残下午无事，正在寓中闲坐，忽见门口一乘蓝呢轿落下，进来一个人，口中喊道：“铁先生在家吗？”老残一看，原来就是高绍殷，赶忙迎出，说：“在家，在家。请房里坐。只是地方卑污，屈驾的很。”绍殷一面道：“说哪里的话！”一面就往里走。进得二门，是个朝东的两间厢房。房里靠南一张砖炕，炕上铺着被褥；北面一张方桌，两张椅子；西面两个小小竹箱。桌上放了几本书，一方小砚台，几枝笔，一个印色盒子。老残让他上首坐了。他就随手揭过书来，细细一看，惊讶道：“这是部宋版张君房刻本的《庄子》，从哪里得来的？此书世上久不见了，季沧苇、黄丕烈诸人俱未见过，要算稀世之宝呢！，老残道：“不过先人遗留下来的几本破书，卖又不值钱，随便带在行箧，解解闷儿，当小说书看罢了，何足挂齿。”再望下翻，是一本苏东坡手写的陶诗，就是毛子晋所仿刻的祖本。

Introduction

晚清时期，清朝帝国外有列强环伺，内则政治腐败，陷入内忧外患的困境当中。由于资产阶级改良派和民主革命派的大力倡导，晚清的小说创作得到了空前的发展，涌现出了一大批有影响的小说，形成了晚清小说创作繁荣的局面。而“晚清四大谴责小说”《官场现形记》、《二十年目睹之怪现状》、《老残游记》、《孽海花》的出现，则是中国小说创作进入到又一个繁荣时期的重要标志。
《老残游记》作者的真名叫刘鹗，字铁云，清末江苏丹徒人，生于1857年，卒于1909年。他出身于一个封建官僚的家庭，却无意于以科举博取功名，懂得算学、医药、治河等实际学问。曾先后在河道总督吴大潋、山东巡抚张曜处做幕宾，帮办治黄工程，得到很大的声誉。刘鹗终因不得志于清廷，去而经商，有过多次创办实业的计划，最后都一一归于失败。庚子（1900年）义和团事起，八国联军侵入北京，刘鹗向联军购得太仓储粟，设平粜局，以振北京饥困。1908年清廷即以私售仓粟罪加以逮捕，流放新疆，次年7月病死于迪化（即今乌鲁木齐）。
作者在小说的自叙里说：“棋局已残，吾人将老，欲不哭泣也得乎?”小说是作者对“棋局已残”的封建末世及人民深重的苦难遭遇的哭泣。小说描写一个被人称做老残的江湖医生铁英在游历中的见闻和作为。老残是作品中体现作者思想的正面人物。他“摇个串铃”浪迹江湖，以行医糊口，自甘淡泊，不入宦途。但是他关心国家和民族的命运，同情人民群众所遭受的痛苦，是非分明，而且侠胆义肠，尽其所能，解救一些人民疾苦。随着老残的足迹所至，可以清晰地看到清末山东一带社会生活的面貌。在这块风光如画、景色迷人的土地上，正发生着一系列惊心动魄的事件。封建官吏大逞淫威，肆意虐害百姓，造起一座活地狱。小说的突出处是揭露了过去文学作品中很少揭露的“清官”暴政。作者说“赃官可恨，人人知之。清官尤可恨，人多不知。盖赃官自知有病，不敢公然为非，清官则自以为不要钱，何所不可?刚愎自用，小则杀人，大则误国，吾人亲目所见，不知凡几矣”。“历来小说皆揭赃官之恶，有揭清官之恶者，自《老残游记》始”。刘鹗笔下的“清官”，其实是一些“急于要做大官”而不惜杀民邀功，用人血染红顶子的刽子手。
《老残游记》在客观上帮助人民认识到对整个官僚集团是不能寄以任何希望的，反映出作者同情民生疾苦的比较进步的一面。但他的基本政治观却是落后的，甚而是反动的。他坚决拥护封建统治，对帝国主义国家的侵略本质缺乏认识，反对资产阶级民主革命和义和团的反侵略斗争，这在书中也有明显的表现。
《老残游记》结构比较松散，但有些片断写得很成功。全书对人物、景物描写都很细腻生动。如大明湖的风光，黄河的冰雪，桃花山的月夜等给人留下的印象极为鲜明。《老残游记》的语言清新流畅、富有韵味。作者写景的特点是自然、逼真，有鲜明的层次和色彩，可以作为优美的散文来读。鲁迅先生在《中国小说史略》中也赞说：“叙景状物，时有可观。”作为一部艺术作品来看，无论在语言的运用上、在对生活的观察上、在细节的描绘上，都看得出作者不愿因袭、追求创造的精神。与晚清的同类小说相较，艺术上的成就是比较卓越的。
此次再版，我们对原书中的笔误、缺漏和难解字词进行了更正、校勘和释义，对原书原来缺字的地方用口表示了出来，以方便读者阅读。由于时间仓促，水平有限，其中难免有所疏失，望专家和读者予以指正。
